Lol, just like horses, it ain't the cost of the horse (usually), it's worming, shoes, vet bills, dentals, feed, etc.

Great that you are doing your research ahead of time, some folks end up with birds before they are ready be it impulse or some got given to them unexpectedly and peas a bit more delicate than the average chicken.I'll start looking up ideas for a nice big coop and I'll use the chain link pen I have as a starter one until I can build a bigger one. I have four dogs so hopefully that should deter the foxes a little bit and I planned on covering the top of the pen so they can't fly out hopefully that will keep out the foxes too, I'm in Berks, Pa I don't know if any of you's guys are from around here but I don't think we have bobcats in the area. Thanks for all the info and advice guys! I really appreciate it, it's gonna take me awhile to research some more and read, still quite a ways away from getting birds yet!

Do you have much in the way of predators there? I had my boy in a chain link pen while he was recovering from an incident, and I found that many creatures can just walk right on through chainlink!
Our wonderful peaperson DylansMom is in PA, so she may be able to give you some good advice: https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/254231/dylansmom
