Has anyone else had to deal with the Craigslist Crazies TM?

I texted a person about a Show Girl chick they had for sale. I asked if they still had the Show Girl. The person answers "I only have baby chicks."[IMG] but that they did still have the Show Girl. I ask when could I come over, person gives me a date and time. I ask for an address (they are several towns away). Silence.

I call them several hours later and the person is speaking a mile a minute and it sounds like they are on speaker phone. It was just strange, like they were high or something. Promised to send pics and never did Also got a "they are my BABIES!" vibe. It was almost like they didn't really want to sell them, weird.

This is not the first time I've had to deal with Craigslist Crazies. I used to sell and buy goats and it got really weird, almost Twilight Zoneish at times.

Person wanted a goat RIGHT NOW for their young child's birthday party and then got verbally abusive when I declined to sell due to safety issues for both the animal and the child (intact buck with horns + small child = not good).

Person gushed over a goat, then freaked when they figured he was born polled. Started going on about birth defects, etc. and backed away like the goat would explode.

Several instances of me going to see an animal (horse, goat or chicken) only to find a mild hoarding situation and a person who is a little "off".

You've definitely dealt with some strange ones! I almost always do my selling through CL. The majority of people I have sold birds to, that have actually come up my driveway and had the opportunity to scope out my house and property, have luckily been friendly and seemed pretty normal. Although, one time I had a person ask if they could go in my house. I was like, "Uh, no." I had a little BB Red OEG roo that they kept eyeing as well, which wasn't for sale. I mean eyeing to the point that I noticed. Creeped me out, to say the least. After they left, they sat at the bottom of the driveway for about ten minutes. That was really the only creepy/weird incident I had. I also ran into a hoarder-type situation when I was looking for some Mille Fleur OEG's. This lady had several rows of pens and the runs were like a mire of mud, to the point that birds got stuck and died in it. Oh, and the smell was awful. Needless to say, I didn't buy any birds from her. Looking back now, I probably should have reported her to someone.

Some police departments recommend their parking lots as "meeting areas," for Craig's list buys & sales. So activity is on security cameras and police close by. Please, please, please NEVER give out your home address.

I'm picky about were he goes, so most likely I'll just end up keeping him. One of my roos, a year old Australorp named Reggie, vanished the other day.[IMG] So now I have room for another roo.

I went ahead and ordered 4 Silver Duckwing OEGBs and 8 Assorted Bantams. My area appears to be a Bantam dessert, with little oasis of over priced birds.

CL can really be frustrating. Even though I now live in a small town, I lived most of my life in a big city and am very cautious about meeting strangers to buy/sell. I also don't like giving out my phone # until I have met someone and feel like they're reasonably normal. I also always bring someone with me. People where I live, though, will routinely invite you - a total stranger - to their home to see the rabbit, etc. I don't do that, and when I tell people I'll meet them someplace public only, some seem miffed. Of course, what do I care if they're miffed? They could be total weirdos bent on doing something criminal. I'd rather be "safe than sorry".

That said, I haven't had a transaction go sideways (yet). I also trust my gut - if I feel like something's not right, it's probably not, and I don't need to buy or sell any livestock that badly. One peeve I must share: if I say in my ad to contact me by email, don't send me an email saying "call me" followed by your phone number. Geez! [IMG]

One issue I've had is people say they want or want to see the item/animal, and then don't show up. And what do you say in the meantime to everyone else who replies?? We live way out in the country so meeting somewhere in town is wise for more than one reason. I think next time I'll do a first come, first served offer ..."I'll be in the parking lot of the feed store In (our town) between 9 and 11 tomorrow, if you are interested in my ________, come have a look. "
