Interesting find inside of an egg... to me at least

We found a tiny egg in the duck nest today. It had a lot of deposits on the outside, it was rough. I figured it was no good because I marked all of the older eggs the other day... or maybe not. We cracked it open assuming it wasnt developing since none of my birds are sitting on the eggs at all. I'm not sure this is even right because all of the eggs I saw when I looked up photos had veins running thru a yolk... this is totally different. My son and I feel terrible because it looks like it was possibly developing. We're not sure though. Take a look and tell me what you think.

If you guys didn't remove anything for clarity of the shot, I'd postulate that is an improperly developed yolk. Otherwise... Where's the yolk? Even close to hatch with a fully formed bird there's visible yolk.

If none of your birds are broody right now, I'm sticking with the deformed yolk theory. I'm sure others with more experience will chime in as well.

I don't think it's an undeveloped embryo. I found a broken egg one of our broody ducks had kicked out and since it was obviously cracked beyond saving, I opened it so I could try to tell what happened. Inside a developing egg is the embryo and the yolk which still looks like an egg yolk like you'd eat.

So my guess is that it's either some kind of meat spot or other kind of tissue. How old are your layers? Sometimes young ones or ones who haven't laid in a while because of molting or going broody etc lay weird eggs.

What you found was a ''wind egg'' (AKA a ''fart egg or ''fairy egg'') they form when a little piece of tissue is shed and passes through the oviduct, where white and shell form around it. Don't worry, wind eggs are not fertile, what you're looking at is just a piece of tissue.
