Ok so I know the general rule is to not assist hatch. But I wonder if anyone has ever made a safety hole in the top of the shell after three chick internally pipped but not externally pipped. She's been internally pipped for at least 24 hours under my broody hen. This particular egg I really want to hatch, but idk if I should intervene or not. How long can they be internally pipped before they run out of air? She was peeping yesterday afternoon, but not hearing her today. Other chick that was prepping yesterday also, pipped earlier today. Please help! These chicks are already a week late.

Hi @VaultGirl27
I'm so sorry that nobody answered your question. Did the hatch turn out ok?

As a rule, I would say that after about 24 hours and you're not hearing anything, a safety hole is a good idea.
Thanks for your response :). I did end up making a safety hole, but it was too late. Chick died in shell :(. I'll definitely know better for next time!

Aw. That always stinks when you coulda shoulda woulda. How was the rest of the hatch?
Not great unfortunately. I had one early quitter, one late quitter, the one who got stuck in shell, and 2 hatched. Of the 2 that hatched only one survived the first week. That baby is almost 3 weeks now and she (🤞 it's a she) is doing great! She has an adopted sibling who is a week older and much bigger because she is a banty and the other baby is a standard. They follow mama everywhere and are already doing all the chicken things. It's adorable 🥰

That's so cute! The older one didn't beat the younger one up?

Are you going to do any more hatches? If so, fingers crossed.

I've been lucky this year with the 2 hatches I've had until my incubator overheated and killed about 100 eggs.... :he

Oh man I'm so sorry! I honestly didn't plan on hatching at all just yet, but when Lucy went broody and I was laid off because of covid, I just decided to go for it. I think I'll probably only hatch if someone goes broody. And no, the older one was totally fine with the baby. She was a week old when I put her under Lucy. The other 2 I tried to put under with her didn't end up working out with mama, so I'm raising them and one other chick I bought a week after that in a brooder.
