International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I sold three olive eggers this morning. I see no profit in any chicken activity that I do! I think a lot of people follow chickengr's araucana strategy and they are probably much smarter than I am!

Chickengr Araucana strategy is used by most of the chooks keepers.

RedBank if you breed a good marans you will make some money from them .

well bred marans chooks are well expensive except in France 2 Euro a fertile egg and 40 to 60 Euro a breeders pullets/ hens , Rooster are cheap .

My marans are the second most expensive in the country after the import .

Next year when I have the imported chooks ( BCM .BLCM and English cuckoo ) I ll be the largest and the most expensive marans stock in the country .

I have a big list of peoples waiting to get chooks or fertile from me next year ( this year I m not salling fertile eggs ,I m giving them to peoples who want to work with me in this marans project). Need to hatch 4/5000 this breeding season to go through my orders for the next year January 2017 sale.

All good . the Marans hens is productive classic farm hens.

i have my work cut off .

I am not talking about profit with araucanas, it is more to cover expenses.

fertile eggs (if pure in colour) are sold 3-3,5 euro, mixed colours 1,5 euro. 6-8 weeks old chicks cost 10-15 euro, adults 25-50 euro. 2 yo bcm roo 30-40 euro... if rare colour roos can cost up to 80 euro.

@Chooks man is it ok if I pen breed instead of having girls separated from boys? my first idea was to breed from 2 pens, using girls from 1 and the boys from another one. I am talking about the birds from french eggs if I manage to hatch some.

that no bad .
you have to breed the rare roosters .Silver cuckoo or some thing else .

as long as we cover the coast we ll be fine ,

when you get yours you can Pen breed because your ( from Monique or Laurent ) are pure So you have to do line breeding .

but for each breed you need to have 2 pens . one for cockerels line ( Sire/Grand sire over the daughters and grand daughters) and other for a pullets line ( Dam /Grand Dam over the son/Grand son ) so you avoid loosing the purity and the vigor of the strain .

2 pens not for this year , is for the second year of breeding .

Quote: That is all I want to do is break even. It will take a long time to recoup cost of coops, birds, time and feed already invested so "break even" is probably way down the road. I don't care about that so much though. I enjoy the birds.

Chooks Man we have been talking about my current birds and planning for them. Once I establish this line does that mean I cannot have LP Marans. Wait I know the answer. You are going to tell me I won't need LP Marans because mine will be that good. HaHaHa

Chooks Man,

First, I want to thank you for all the information you have shared with us. In the U.S. we have been conditioned to think a certain way when it comes to selecting our breeders. So for the first time we are thinking outside of the box. While well intentioned, I believe most of the advice, critiques, etc. that we receive from breeders in the U.S. is primarily for the selection of show birds. One of the most important things I've learned from this forum is that there is a DIFFERENCE between breeder birds and show birds. Me and others on this forum want to be quality breeders first and foremost.

Second, I have noticed in several different posts that you suggest selecting breeders based on gender to express certain traits. For example, I recall that you mentioned that color comes from the cock and good combs come from the hen. I'm curious, are there any other traits that tend to be gender specific and, if so, what are those traits? I'm trying to keep good notes for future breeding practices and selection practices for future breeding stock. If I misunderstood your prior posts my apologies.

Thanks,
Keith

OK .now a little chooks genetic . So a little Bla Bla .

Chooks genes are grouped in two groups.
Group 1 are a sex linked genes. other world this genes are related to sex .the rooster have 2 copies and the hen have one copies. So the Roo will passe his genes to all his progeny ,and the hen can only passes her genes to her son s Not daughters
.Example . Gold s+/Silver S . Rooster have 2 = SS if silver and the hen have just one expressed S-. same for Golden s+s+ for the roo and s+- for the he
Id genes responsible for lighting up the shanks . Rooster always have a lighter shank than the hens

there is more sex linked genes . most of them are unknown to us.
the reason why the type is from the hen because the chick come from the egg . the egg come from the hen SO the hen dictate the size of the egg and that will determine the size of the chick and over all type.

Group 2; are the Autossomal genes ( any thing is not sex linked than is Autossomal ) both sexes have the 2 copies .
Example ; Feather shank Pti1 . both hen and rooster have 2 copies of this genes . So both are Pti1/Pti1

some are more complex ,like the Autossomal Red ( Red shoulder and spotted chest . both have a genes but some hens do no show up . like a black copper hen she is black no red shoulder but can have a spotted chest .
It is never strait forward with chooks genetic.

hope that will help .

we can map the genes as we go on in this thread .

Example . Gold s+/Silver S . Rooster have 2 = SS if silver and the hen have just one expressed S-. same for Golden s+s+ for the roo and s+- for the he

you asked the question and gave the answer .

that correct . BUT wait tell we see the eggs color .that is very important.

you have the type .
you have the body color
Need the egg color ?
