International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

if it is not smelly than it is a wet pox .no cure for it as well .will hung around for a long time in the flock and the area they are living in .

the best way to deal with it ,is to eliminate the sick birds and disinfect all the area with iodine solution .

my mum used to say to me when I was young and helping her " keep the healthy chooks healthier and help the sick chooks to depart from this life without pain "

I learn my lesson with a last marans breeding project .I bred chooks I shouldn t .I pay for it heavily .

this time I ll never breed the chooks that been sick in they life ,only the healthy ones will breed .
naturally healthy chooks is my goal this time NO the SOP of any kind .

after I gave raw garlic yellow gunk as if got burnt. I will see what happens today. the roo has been eating, drinking, crowing, etc. as if nothing happens. the other chickens that had fowl pox are fine. with so many mosquitos around I will always have fowl pox as everyone else here. even vaccines don't help as they get some other strain. if the roo and hen get well with garlic I will keep them. they are not threat for my other birds.

I have decided not to breed sick birds that had mycoplasma and similar. but those ones that had cocci, worms, etc I think will not be a problem to get healthy chicks from them. is that correct?

btw, I want to breed older birds only. no pullets eggs again.

I found frozen chicken waterers! this is the first time this year. luckily we might have that low temperatures for a couple of hours early in the morning. big plastic dishes with water for ducks and geese did not freeze.

my roo and hen are better. I will be giving them raw garlic for 3 days and we shall see if they stay.

agree with you .not breeding from the chooks that had a bad disease like mycoplasma. Mareck etc..............
the little scratchy thing is not a problem ,

happy that your roo and hen are getting better .good job.

frozen water in Greece ,that is a cold winter in Europe .

give you chooks some black sun flower seed before they roost in the evening .

I have been giving them black sun flower seed since the temperature dropped. in the morning I mixed chilly pepper, oregano and vitamins/minerals with their mash and wetted it with warm water. I also give them some whole corn in winter.

I am planning my new set up for chickens when I move. it seems I will make about 11 coops with runs. due to hot weather we can have little grass during the colder months only. that means no real foraging, just some free roaming. would 60 sq meters (645 sq ft) be enough for 10 chickens?

sound great .around 6 square meters by chooks .a lot of space .
if you want to have a green grace or vegies for them ,you can ,just need to design your hens houses with 2 run one for a summer 6 months rotation.
grow stuff in one run for 6 months than let the chooks get access to it . grow stuff in the other run for 6 months and do a same thing .
it is better for them to have 3 green square metres than 6 metres dry .

I ll hep you design them .just tell me the location of your selected place for the chooks .how long and wide .facing witch way east or west ,any tree around .some photos will be better for me to see the landscape .

you are looking after them very well . they should be happy .most chooks they can only dream about what you are giving to your chooks .

what do you give them to worm them ?
