International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Yes, that's the roo in question. Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply! I'll keep him!

The flock of chickens that was massacred, 1 roo/5 hens, was from Alchemist Farms. This BCM roo is from some eggs I found stashed away in the pen after the attack. So he is 100% from those birds.

The Blue Coppers pictured are a bit more mysterious. Their sire was also an Alchemist Farms rooster. Different from the one that was attacked. The hens I purchased locally years ago as young pullets. Two Splash and one blue copper. The lady I got them from hatched them from eggs purchased off eBay. She didn't remember the seller. No further info on them. The Blue Coppers pictured are from these 4 birds. I no longer have their parents, gave them away, but do have pictures I can share. I'll have to do some digging on my phone. I'll post them later.
Yes, they hatched at the same time as the roo, also 20 weeks, but from different pen of chickens.

good news ,you can breed them together ,both cockerel and pullets have a correctbody type ,let see how the tails end up looking like .low or high .
yes if you have photos of the parent that will be great .

I gave them a tiny drop of Nutri-drench on their beaks. both looking better, more alert and sitting up like i expect hatched chicks to do. They both came from smaller eggs. The one I was not sure of, I do think the yolk had not fully absorbed yet, but the two oldest ones were bound and determined to eat it out of its shell.

Thanks, I will contact the farm and ask[/QUOTE]
In my experience ,the chicks that hatch quick they become active soon as they get out of the hatcher .but the chicks they take a long time to hatch because of any troubles .they sleep and rest for more than 36 hours when they come out of the hatcher to become active .

It was a cold night out setting up pens, moving birds around. They have leg bands on and logged. I have the hardest pen to get to empty. It had most of my breeding flock of Coppers in it and only pen not heated. Blaze and his girlfriends will be in there in the spring. Long night but beautiful morning. This mornings sunrise. God Bless you all! Have a Blessed weekend my friends!

if you breed from them you have to ask the breeder you got the eggs from if they come from a same pen or mix eggs from different pens .that will help you breeding them in the future .

Just got a message back from the breeder, she states she line breeds her FBCM and assures me they should be able to be bred with each other. Hmmm, might I want to consider getting a few from another source, or at least a rooster

I m not sure about this line breeding idea .we never breed from chooks hatched from eggs come out of the same pen ,except if we know who is a dam ,than we can breed half sibling { sired by the same rooster but they have different mama hen }
plus to line breed any chooks they have to be faultless other wise the faults on them will go from bad to worst .

if you want to properly breed them ,than I agree with you get some eggs from another breeder .

it is a coment mistake people make when they buy eggs from one breeder ,they hach the chicks and breed from them , bad bad idea .

well the FBCM hatch for me is over. I ended up with 7, only one never developed and the other 8, well, strange thing, they all were fully formed but dead. then it hit me as i opened each egg, each of them when they tried to pip were at the wrong end. they drowned before they could get their first breath.

Would like to find out why they tried to pip from wrong end so I can prevent it next time if possible

I tell you .all those problems come from a so called line breeding , I call it inbreeding without any plan for selection . inbreeding causes a lot problem in chooks . the fertility and hatchibality will drop very low .than the body type start tobecome smaller too .
