chooks man

Thank you! And no the judges don't know crap. She got in that show cage and never would pose. She held her tail down the whole time but perked right up when we got her home. She didn't like the show life. Lol

My journey with Marans came to an abrupt end two nights ago. This morning we found this guy in a trap. I only have 1 hen left (a cross). All the Black Copper and Blue Copper birds are gone So sad to loose them. I need to build a new coop with superior predator resistance. The mink squeezed in a 2" gap over a door. It's been dispatched but that's never easy. Even though it needed to be done.

Sorry for the lose of your Marans. That is awful. I have had that happen before by dogs and weasels. We didn't have Marans then. When we built our pens this time we went with 1/4" hardware cloth. We also put wide brick type edging underground and all the way around the pen. To help keep anything from digging under. A good guardian dog would help also. Our dog has been good but she is getting very old. We need a replacement for her to teach.

I went out and got some updated pictures of Blaze. The wind was blowing that's why his tail is messed up. I think he is filling out some. What do you guys think? Improved? Anything popping out on him that I don't see?

I think he would look better in Kentucky!!

He is a beautifully colored and wide bird. The only thing I can remotely think could be improved upon is his breast depth but other than that he is fantastic! His breast will likely fill in more as he matures more. Gorgeous bird!

Thank you! I was worried because when he was young he seemed so small compared to the BLC. I really think he has caught up. He actually might have been out of my second hatch and was younger.

He is on track then. A month can make a big difference in them. I am in love with his color!
Thank you! I noticed that since he is the only cockerel in that pen now. He is getting pretty bold. He kicked a hen turkeys butt that went after one of the hens. Luckily the tom didn't go after him. He kind of been sizing me up. I try to keep an eye on him and try not to let him come up from the back. I was curious of what he would do. He was beside me and went around behind me. Not sure if he would attack. He didn't but he was so close almost touching me. Like literally an inch from me.

I hope he doesn't get aggressive. I can handle a mild aggression but when they get to the point of being nuts I do away with them. For example, my little show OEG cockerel is my best buddy most of the time and is very tame. Every now and then he gets a wild hair and tries to fight me. I just grab a hold of him as soon as he bucks up on me and pet him and carry him around a few minutes. That settles him down and lets him know I'm still the boss. Maybe try that with your cockerel. He thinks he is big man on campus now that he rules the pen unrivaled.
