International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Today I separated Group 3 cockerels from pullets.
27 stunning pullets and 33 good cockerels. Well pleased with how heavy they are. Very chunky and colourfull.
Now have 3 cockerels pens have done my selection from both groups 1 and 2. But not done group 3.
Well happy with every thing.
I will post some photos when I get home

Ah old Jackson . he is proven sire .
did you manage to get some chicks out of him?

Yes, but I was selling the first batches to make enough money to pay feed costs for a few months. Had I known I was going to loose my blue boy, I would have held onto more of them! As it is, blue boys hens stopped laying almost a month ago so no more eggs from them nor chicks either😭

Still, Jackson and his one son are covering most of the flock, and Albedo, the white cock, gets a fair amount covered when noone is looking. I'm guessing Albedo is covering more than a few, as he is blue under the white and I'm getting quite a few blue chicks from my mostly black silver hens🤭

I had had the white hens in with blue boy and discovered he's a white carrier, so I wanted his more pure silvering in with the white ladies. He had his own little group.

I have two hens left to sell. I think someone is going to buy them. This will bring me down to 18 hens and 4 roosters. I don't know when I have been this low on Marans. Has anyone ever water glassed eggs? I watched a video on YouTube. Just curious.

you have done well ,last 2 will goes soon .
great to lower the chooks number before breeding ,that will give you room to hatch more chicks.
18 hens if they are all breeders qualities is not a small number over 70 eggs a weeks to work with .more than enough .I think .

What water glassed eggs ?

I watched a YouTube video on water glassing eggs. How to store eggs all winter. They used this method in the old days. I think I will only hatch out of the two Copper pens this year.
