his body type and comb are stunning ,but his copper quality is very bad . not good my friend .

Yes Dark Angel is my best for color. He has gotten a white tinge to his earlobes that wasn't there before warm weather. Hormones?

I put Dark Angel and Queen together to breed for copper quality and good type hopefully. If she will stop going broody long enough for me to produce some chicks.

his copper is very good , the chick is a throw back ,so DA is a carrier of Split hackle marking { halo }one of his copper gene s+ is golden type . this gene need to be bred out .as long as the pullets have a good copper you are safe .easy to breed cockerels from them .
looking at the copper quality of the pullet you posted early 004 X DA daughter I think 004 is the way out ,but first we need to see cockerel from them .

Queen is old ,she want to take it easy .

this pullet is a real deal .has all the trait we looking for ,plus gorgeous copper is showing on her hackle . well happy for you my friend.
so 004 and dark Angle are compatible .keep hatching from them ,if 004 is laying .
love to see cockerels from this pairing .

Thank you! Her eggs didn't hatch well and she held her tail too high. Also Dark Angel stripped the feathers off her back terribly so I turned her out to free range.

004 and DA were too compatible. He overmated her and she looks terrible now. Her back was bare and raw. She needed a break so she is running with my layers. Her eggs hatched very poorly as well, I'm assuming due to the brother/sister mating.

Yes Queen sure does want to take it easy! She is tired of this breeding mess and wants a vacation. Sorry old girl.. not yet!

This is Lemon Blue. She is a dainty little thing but her tail angle is the best of any blue copper I have produced. If I can produce a blue copper cockerel from her with good tail angle, I will mate him to a hen with good mass to improve on that.

This is Houdini. She excels at escaping but is not very photogenic. She hides or goes up on the roost when I get my phone out to take pictures. Her tail is high but he mass is good. The blue coppers are a work in progress.

Here is Dark Halo so he isn't left out. He went through a mean spell after I put him with females but hasn't attacked in a few weeks. Hopefully he has settled down for good. Couldn't get a good picture of Jolie to save my life. She has the chicken equivalent of ADHD.

yes that is too much to ask for from marans hens ,4/5 a week super large 70/80g and dark number 6. oval shape . is the goal to select for .
marans hen should lay around 180 super large eggs a year and they can leave long productive life .
we need to select for those traits .most of marans breeder are only selecting for dark egg layer and body marking .
we need to select for more traits so ours marans will reach they potential .

I wish mine would lay more but their color is good so mine are the opposite. My breeder Marans are stingy with eggs! I have dewormed, added calf manna, oyster shells, they always get a good feed mix. I dont know what their problem is.

agree with you .need cockerel from her .
need cockerels from all your hens ,so you can compare them to each other to see witch pairing is producing the best ,cockerels or pullets .
finding the producer pair is the way to go .

last year when I paired Black Bamba with Dalakhania ,both big ,wide and strong .I thought they will produce big correct cockerels ,I was so wrong , they produced 2 mediocre cockerels ,but one Stunning correct ,big pullet .so this pair is pullet line producer .not cockerels .
Black Bamba X his half sister Ravendale produced big correct cockerels 2 and big correct pullets 3 . so this pair is very compatible .

not the look of the breeder chooks we are after ,we are after they progeny ,if they can produce a correct progeny . if they are compatible .
