Here is a pullet with a halo. I had her penned up but turned her back out. I want to nip halos and lemon necked Marans (as I call them) in the bud. I agree with Chooksman that if I keep allowing for it, then it will become harder to eliminate.

A female can pass her halo onto her sons. A male can pass his halo onto both male and female offspring. (I learned that from Chooksman) This pullet is from Dark Halo. Her eye color is fairly clear so that is why I had her penned up in the first place.

agree with you .she is a cull .never breed with golden hackle pullet. no point .
cockerel is a different story ,because cockerels have 2 copper genes some time one gene is gold and the other is copper ,that why we have halo hackle .
it is easier to get a good copper from a halo hackle rooster but you will never get any thing good from a halo hackle pullet .

@kfelton0002 ; how many pullets you are trying to breed with ? you really got me lost .I thought I know your flock not any more ,
what happen to last year pullets ,did you breed from them or just bred they mothers ?

Here are some random pics of my grow outs @ 9 weeks old. I have 6 cockerels and 11 pullets. So far type, tails and eye color seem to be good but things can change as we know. About half are showing decent color and the others have just a touch of copper or none.

Pictures #1-3 are mostly pullets some with copper hackles and others with little to no copper. Overall the girls have nice clean eyes, type and tails.

Picture #4 - I like this cockerels type, comb, tail and eye color but he not expressing any copper so far. He may turn out mahogany or all black.

Picture #5 - This cockerel has the most color showing so far with some leakage on his breast. He has good type, eye color, and tail set is low but long.

Picture #6 - This cockerel is showing some copper but just not as much as the cockerel in Pic #5.

I bred from Queen (hen), Malika, another no name black copper (#20 is what I think I call her), and two blue copper pullets. All but Queen and Duchess were 2019 offspring. Queen didn't lay well because she was almost constantly broody and I struggled with one of the blue coppers eating eggs in the group mated pen. Duchess literally only laid maybe 7 eggs all year so I've culled her as a breeder because she is a poor layer. I didn't end up with a single chick from Duchess. Not much luck all the way around and just a handful of grow outs to show from it.

Next year I plan on single mating Dark Angel to Pink band (Queen and Duke's daughter I just caught up). May retire Queen. Broken wing may go over Malika if he looks good when he matures. Then I will decide what 2020 pullets to breed when they fully mature. I've got plenty of time to think on things. For now, breeding is over until spring. I am only in the brainstorming phase for next year. I won't make my mind up completely until after the first of the year.
