International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here are some of the hens he was bred to.
They look alright to me . I will look at them later in my lap top . I m on the phone now photos are smaller .
Hope you will have some chicks hatching soon . We can use them for future breeding with new ro9ster progeny .
Even if the new rooster has some wheaten on him as long as he is pure Marans we can always use him because your hens are pure BCM . I will show you how when is needed . Long way to go .

I have pictures of the hen but she’s in such rough shape I’m embarrassed to post them:oops: She was really badly abused out in the coop by the hens and the rooster. I was thinking of her as a cull because she didn’t hold Herself like a Maran she was always hunched and walked backwards a lot. She’s actually doing a lot better with Russel who is super gentle and treats her like a queen. She has pale earlobes. I don’t know if that’s normal for her or if she’s just anemic from being on the bottom of the pecking order. I checked all my other hens and they all have red earlobes. She is however my best layer. 5 dark brown eggs a week. MyMarans hens are amazing they’ve been laying since January 3-5 eggs a day from 8 hens. The “cull” hen is pictured below along with her egg.
I like the shape and the colour of her eggs .
She is not related to the other hens?
Pale earlobe is alright as long as there is not white on it .

I’m pretty sure they’re all related. I have no way of knowing which ones are full of half sisters to the rooster, but they’re definitely all hatch mates out of the same breeding pen. I bought them as chicks last year, before I knew the right questions to ask for breeding purposes:)

Well, Mr. White tail rooster was culled. He became too sick from the comb infection and I am still waiting for medication to be shipped.

So those hens are with Mr. Good Comb now.

I have an incubator full of their eggs. I'm curious to see if they are even fertile and what the chicks will look like if they are.
He has not been mating for a couple of weeks before cull. Poor guy.

I am sorry to here that, but glad you have other roosters to choose from! I read your post about nasty junior, the only rooster with pure black has to be a jerk, of course! My original breeding rooster Was Just like that, he was out to kill all of us! He died flying at the door trying to kill my husband! Unfortunately out of 9 chicks I only got one rooster!
I hope the eggs in your incubator hatch!

So far, it looks like a few are fertile. We will see if they hatch.
That poor guy was friendly. I liked him.
I am very glad I kept 3 cockerels last year. Now down to 2.
Mr. Good comb and Junior.

I almost expect him to do the same when charging the door. He is awful. I am going to make sure to choose wisely from the cockerels I'm growing out from him. Temperament is just as important when breeding a good Marans. At least to me it is.

I hope you get more cockerels this season!

Agree with you the temperament is very important when breeding domestic animals . We don t want to be hurt by them .
I have 72 roosters in totals only one of them(Blackgen) in nasty . I can not get ready of him he is a pure import line , I have to breed from him first or find a replacement . A friend of mine Fiona said she has one pure import cockerel from me . Hope he is better than mine .
