International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Two chicks today. One Brahma (what I was hatching for) and one layer. Now Marans yet but both eggs were growing when I candled them. I’ll post more tomorrow when hopefully more hatch.

I took photos of a couple of the older, confirmed pullets while I was moving them to their new pen.

Leg color is light on all pullet line chicks. Interesting.

I will say, most of these pullet chicks are from 2 or 3 hens.
I only hatched from the darkest eggs in this pen.

Pullet line, Mr. Good comb sire.

I know this pullets dame is white band. Big, dark, spotted egg.

Tuesday went with hubby to pick up his new mower. While he was waiting for assistance he was looking at the chicks. I was looking for my feed brand.

He called me over to the chicks. I told him they never have a breed I'm interested in. He said there are some black chicks over here, come see? What are they? He knows I love Marans. They never have Marans. :idunno I really thought it was "safe" for me to look at the chicks.

I was so wrong.

There in that stock tank was little baby Marans.
:wee:wee:wee

Let's say I had a moment of weakness. :D

Meet my 6 little hatchery babies! :love They were sexed pullet so we shall see.

Could the crooked toe be from an injury?
It could be.
But also had a few chicks that had a hard time hatching. The last chicks that struggle from high humidity.
After they hatch, they seem to take a longer time getting up and walking around. Could this cause the toe to bend?
I'm guessing she was probably one. But it's only an assumption.

I don't get many with a wonky toe but every once and a while it happens.
I would think if it were genetic or vitamin deficiency I would see a pattern or more chicks with this problem.

The few times I've caught it and taped the toe flat. The next morning I take the tape off and the toe is straight.

Looking forward to watching them grow!

My first Marans were from a feed store. That's where it all began.
A few of them laid a dark egg too.

We need growing up photos don't forget :)

I really don't know for sure. Could be? Maybe some of the others know more.

I agree.

This would make me think it was something simple, like hatching issue was the cause if it was so easily corrected and not regularly seen. I don't think I would worry too much about it if it was not a regular occurrence.

:thumbsup You bet!
