Remember Creutzfeld-Jacobs disease?

We only ever eat absolutely healthy birds, deer, wild boar etc. that we bred, slaughtered or hunted ourselves.
Yes that’s what I was thinking, and so I don’t think I’m going to eat my rooster with the brain disease, just in case. In Britain, we’ve had mad cow/Jacobs and scrapie epidemics, don’t want to add poultry to the list of devastated livestock.

My chicks are now 7 1/2 weeks old. I only ended up keeping 4 of the 8 due to space and feather picking. The feathers are coming back. I’m fairly sure I kept 2 pullets and 2 cockerels.

If I were to breed these I’m sure I would need more birds to start with. Would you suggest getting more eggs from the same breeder that these came from or should I go with a completely different breeder. Im also thinking about possibly using these as for an olive egger project if they are too far from standard. The did come from very dark eggs so they have that going for them.

I’m just thinking about possibilities right now. I really only got them because the hatching eggs were close and cheap. But now that I have them I’ve been spending a lot of time researching marans and marans crosses just looking for options on how close or far theses might look from standard

I can get more pictures if needed. They are getting a whole lot faster and less cooperative for a photo session so I just snapped a few real quick.

Olive eggers do seem to be a rage/fad right now in my area. I've got 3 that are going on 8 weeks old. Another mix possibility is your Roo over a Barred Rock hen producing sex links. All your cockerels will be barred and your pullets will be Midnight Majesty Marans (that's just one name they are called by hatcheries)
That's what I'm going to end up with if/when eggs are hatched from my BCM cockerel and barred rock pullets in the future. But my farm store barred rocks vary quite a bit in looks, color and pattern wise so I'm not sure if that will affect the outcome.

I'm thinking about just choosing eggs to hatch from hens that seem the most healthy and lay the nicest, darkest eggs.

That's a good plan but do your BR hens lay different shades. I only have one hen laying and 2 are a few weeks out yet. But my 1 lays a super light egg so that don't work for me. Your BCM roo if,he came from a dark egg then that should throw down to your Marans mix progeny.
@Chooks man would know more than I do about that.

There's some variation in the eggs' depth of color, but I think since the pullets are still young (20 weeks), that might change as they mature. Later on when I think their eggs are coming out consistently I'll look for the ones laying the darkest eggs. Some seem pretty dark now, actually. This morning's eggs...

I like the one in back, left side.
