I'm doing the same only on paper. I've gone back thru this thread and writing down what everyone's comments were when I first posted pics of mine.I started entering some basic information about my Marans into my phone. I saw you posted about taking notes a few days ago. That’s partly what inspired me to start taking better notes. I’m using an app that I downloaded a while back to keep track of egg production over time. Since the option is in the app and my phone is always in my pocket I figured it would be an easy way to do it.I'm doing the same only on paper. Lots still to learn for me also...
If you still have egg color pics from their hatch that's good info to keep also.
What I want to do now is keep records for each bird and then create a separate journal with notes from the start of this thread to present of all the important info that's been posted. It's all in this thread I just gotta do the homework.
At least you have a general color of egg that they may have come from, I don't have that. If your looking to pursue the BCM journey, I was told to get individual pics of every angle possible and the experts can give an idea on who to pair up.I saw you posted about taking notes a few days ago. I do have a couple pictures of the hatching eggs but never took the time to mark anything so now I don’t know who goes with any of the eggs. I plan to record that information in future hatches. I have been trying to take a couple pictures every time I go out to check on my birds so I can compare how things change over time. They sure grow fast.
I currently only have 4 marans 2 pullets , and 2 cockerels. All four came from the same breeding pin. I don’t know how closely related my birds are but I assume that they are closely related enough that I probably shouldn’t try to breed them together. At least you have a general color of egg that they may have come from, I don't have that. Also document the first 20 ish eggs from each of your girls, for consistency of egg color, shape and size.
Hopes this helps.
From what I have learned it's ok to breed siblings until you have an infertility issue. Or if your dealing with too many faults.I currently only have 4 marans 2 pullets , and 2 cockerels. I’ll probably just put the cockerels with my barred rock and any of my pullets that have the blue egg gene. Since there is no standard for olive Eggers I can just try some different pairing and see what happens. Eventually I would like to get a few eggs from some other source but for now I’m just dipping my toes into the whole breeding thing.
I believe parent to child is almost always ok but siblings can amplify problems rather quickly and is not good practice unless you know what your doing and you have very specific faults you are working on.From what I have learned it's ok to breed siblings until you have an infertility issue. Hopefully someone with more experience on this will chime in with a more detailed explanation.
I have read articles that say it is ok for a generation or two if you’re just looking to breed egg laying hens. I just don’t think it’s a great place to start a line. You might be right. I've been known to be wrong before.![]()
