The Cornish cross came out tender and juicy throughout the entire bird. The Marans had more and better flavor but it was pretty chewy if I’m being honest. The white meat sections were quite good just tougher than I’m used to and the meat to bone ratio was definitely a lot more bone and less meat than I’m used to seeing. I believe this is an adjustment than I could get used to

The dark meat was extremely chewy and not something I care to have again. I believe it would have been better to cook it in a crockpot at 8 months old. I’m in no way upset about that. I learned an important thing today. I’ll try butchering the next one younger. I currently have 7 12 week old Marans cross cockerel and they can’t all stay.

I tend to roast them and then save the meat for things like chicken and dumplings, or chicken pot pie, or add to soups. The bones make the best broth, and if you don't eat skin, USE IT IN THE BROTH, don't waste it. You can even can the meat after roasting it. Chop it into smaller pieces for canning. You can even can it in the broth you make from the bones to help preserve flavor... in fact I recommend you do. My kids like rotisserie. Marans are always low and slow.

Well that's a bummer...
@Punkybrewster hasn't been on in awhile. Maybe she will see my tag.
@Bantambird ...any leads you know of?
I haven't been shopping for birds for a while, and I tend to stay off the facebook breeder groups because I tend to get annoyed in there. What can I say? I prefer the positivity in here. I will eventually need to track down another Black Silver breeder so I can keep my line from getting issues, but otherwise, I haven't been keeping up!

Just some photos from last week so you can see the type of the marans chicks when you get, update from today coming next.
Somehow managed to get a lavender silkie, despite crossing paint hens to an unrelated white cock. Guess I’m just lucky both lines happened to carry lavender. Less lucky that both lines also appear to have the single comb gene.

The BlCM chick, at three weeks clearly a cockerel already, comb big and red. Esme’s son and Channel’s grandson. Got his grandmother’s fantastic type, the photos don’t do it justice. Deep chest, rectangle and long. It’s a shame Loki’s squirrel tail genes are going to spoil his type, but I think I’ll keep him and maybe sell Loki to darken the eggs of all future marans and improve type.
I think I’ll name him Napoleon, even if I am English.

BCM chick, Natasha’s chick. No yellow legs! In fact, the legs are really nice and pink. It will carry a yellow legged gene though. Feathering a bit faster than the Napoleon, and not so clearly male, but I don’t want to rule it out, it’s too young to sex accurately. Type nice and long, not as deep as my BlCMs, but it’s dam has a low tail so hopefully it will too, though Natasha and Loki’s two sons both had high tails. Showing mossiness over the shoulder, not clear on the picture but quite bold copper in person, not all over though. The only mossy chick I’ve had was Loki, it’s father, but non of its siblings have ever been mossy.

My Marans are now just over one year old so officially a rooster and 2 hens I guess. It feels like the year flew by. The girls are bare backed from all of the attention Axl gives them. I’m heading out of town for the holiday and have arranged for my cousin to chicken and dog sit

The Easter hatch cockerels are getting pretty ornery and I feel like it’s getting close to time to move them into the freezer. If I cull them at 14-15 weeks would they make a decent meal? They are mixes not true marans. Sire is BCM. Dams are OE and EE

I love this group.
I have 3 marans total. 2 hens and 1 I thought was a cockerel. I am looking at the cockerels in this thread and I am thinking that my cockerel MIGHT be a hen with a big red comb. I am saying that because the feathers on his/ her back do not have much copper. He/she should be around 11 weeks.

Is he a girl?

That's a male... Coloring on back, big comb and pointed hackles.
