I had a uh-oh moment yesterday and need some advise. Joannie has started back laying and I've gotten 2 eggs from her since going broody. She didn't lay yesterday. Now...the dominant wild man of the 14 week olds (which I should have separated by now but didn't) chased her down and mated her. How many eggs could I seriously collect and still be positive their not his? I'm sure if she lays today it would still be Kongs but then what?
I absolutely want no mix ups... Both cockerels from that group are now separated.
Looks great! How’s his temperament?Went away on vacation and came home to see that my 23/ almost 24 wk old BCM rooster DROGON has blossomed! I’ve posted him before; @wrathsfarm you might recognize him!
Let me know what y’all think!
Cheers![]()
I was trying to figure out how many eggs I could be positive were from Kong and not his mating her. I'm not going to use any now, because I needed to get eggs under that broody, But here was my question again.I have read that hens can reject sperm from unwanted males. I feel like if she was being chased and not willingly submissive this would likely be one of the times a hen would choose to reject the sperm in favor of the dominant male of the flock so chances are low that it was a successful mating.
That being said if you truly want no mixup you have to accept the possibility that what you witnessed was not his first run on her. Chances are low but not zero that he has been breeding her for some time while you were not looking.
Hi. If I were you, I would not hatch any of those eggs and eat Joanie's eggs for the next 21 days. Like someone mentioned, what if that 14 week old got to her right before Kong. I am saying that because it's so hard to cull chicks. And the time, the money, the energy etc...I had a uh-oh moment yesterday and need some advise.
