nice bird. my roo had feathers on his middle toes as well but they fell off. his offspring don't have feathers on the middle toe.

My chicks are now 6 weeks old. Out of the 14, I think I have 4 pullets and 10 cocks :-/

I plan on keeping 1 maybe 2 cocks. I'd like to give the rest away as I don't really have the time or interest to process them at this point. Plus, the roost bar is getting kind of crowded.

How old until I can determine obvious faults?

they shouldn t have any feathers on they middle toes . as show bird ,but for breeding it is ok if the feathers are just tiny .
this middle toes feathering is associated with heavy shanks feathering and V hook shanks .
the marans in general do carry this recessive traits . because the gene responsible for it is not actually stable . it is some how in the middle of Heavy feathering gene Pti2 and pti+ no feathered shanks .
marans are Pti1.

he ll be better mated to hens without feathers or not enough .

I like his type .he look solid to me .full of vigor .

Thank you sir.

They were sleeping on the floor until about 1 week ago. So I went in just before dark and put them on the roosts. After 3-4 days of doing this, they now get up there on their own. They walk halfway up the ramp and jump to the rail.
