I am glad to find so many posts in this thread but I have been overloaded with work these days. I reserved this weekend to go through the posts as there is so much information. I will try to keep notes as well.

thank you very much and I am sorry I cannot comment yet as I am a total beginner.

I m all about balance , no extreme .other wise I can not take a tackle a marans project with this grander .

restoring all the marans varieties . that is a lot of chooks .a lot of pens . a lot time .and..........................

So I don t want to end up having a basket full of dark eggs BUT yard and pen full of headless, tailless. comb less and more lesssssssss chooks ,

I told you I ll have a greatest looking marans chooks . NO compromise . TRUE FRENCH HEN. nothing less.

Sounds like a Mission Statement! I know you will do this. Wonderful goal!

Chooks Mans,

Please explain why you would not mate two breeders that came from 8/9 eggs? Do the dark egg genes from each breeder cancel each other out or will it result in birds of bad type / traits?

Thanks,
Keith

Hi Kcrandall. nice ti=o see you here.

here why I do not mate two breeders that come from 8/9 eggs.

eggs color and type they are not related .is just a good breeders ( balance ) and bad breeders ( extreme).

Eggs color genetically speaking is related to genes and the number of eggs layed by a hen in one year.

Study in France ( around a 60 when they start creating all the hybrid layer ) that the hen s ho managed to lay a really dark egg 8/9 they are bad layer . they eggs stay longer before get released so have more time to be coated again and again . that why is darker NO because extra genes,

Because of this extra coating the shell is very hard for the chicks to break through .So lower hatch rate .

you do not want to combine 2 breeders ho carries this similar genes, if you do it, than in few year you will have no chooks in your backyard.

one breeders from dark eggs layer and the other from good color layer 6 ( 7 at start and 5 at end with most 6 ). Balance t out. keeping the dark eggs gene and the laying ( hatching ) ability .

Quote: This makes sense of a lot of things.

Complaints that eggs did not hatch/low hatch rate.
My poor layers having very dark eggs. I have two of these.
Humidity difficulty with Marans hatches.

I had a Splash Marans, she had a pretty egg probably a 5 to 6 but she laid 5-6 eggs weekly. So is that another factor, not just color but frequency when we talk about looking at 30 eggs or judging the hens eggs. A hen that lays often with good color versus a hen that lays a few very dark eggs.

I AM a true european forever but I love this thread. when I make breaks (I work from home) I check the posts. as today was the last working day (holidays) I was too busy. I even didn't have time to read all of splendid information. at the beginning I fell in love with bcm but I got hooked, lol. when I saw nice photos of silver cuckoo marans I decided to give up a part of my vegetable garden (which is disaster anyway) and I am making plans to make a new coop.

I have just tracked the parcel with the monique's eggs but it is not clear whether it left france on 8/8/16 or it has arrived in greece. I cannot wait till morning to call the post office. it seems I will not be sleeping tonight.

my hen laid about 5 eggs per week and the eggs were 5-6. unfortunately she didn't have the best health and died. I have her daughter, 4 mo and she already looks better then her mother. her hackles are more copper although she should have a bit more. she seems a bit skinny but she might improve.

tell me about humidity issue with the marans hatches. I have 2 brahna broodies available but 18 eggs will go to the incubator.
