International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

No, her earlobe is not white. The feathering there has some white, but the skin is red. As for the comb, I don't know what happened. Maybe she cut it and it grew back funny, but it wasn't always that way. The second picture is more accurate as far as under color. No real white there. Here she is in the shade.

that is good no white ears lobe .
the light reflection can cause a lot variation .

if her comb was just cut than it is all good as far as her genetic make up . because what left from her comb is great .

what sort of egg color she lay ?

love her orange eyes

egg #4 with that body type ,orange eyes and good comb is a breeder in my book .
need to be mated to a Roo with a dark egg gene ( his mama /aunts and sister lay dark eggs ) and well colored .
hope you have one .

I have one that I know has a dark egg gene, but not so much feather color. I think I'll go with the roo in my avvy. He's got pretty good egg, and the hen can probably fix his comb problem, too.

yes the comb can be fixed from both parent .if your hen have a nicer comb than it is great . you ll have mix progeny some with good comb other with a bad one the rest will be in the middle .
select the best cockerel with a good comb and mate him back to his Dam to reinforce the good comb traits .

well colored Roo will fix the body color of the hen /hens .

Hazel laid her first egg this afternoon. It's not very dark, and it's small. Hoping she will lay darker, bigger eggs as she matures, but still excited to get my first marans egg!:wee

her first egg is lighter but has a lot dark dots .
she ll lay darker eggs than that for sure as the low of nature ,because she has a dots.
the first one is always lighter but the color will pick up
to know if the pullet carry the right amount of dark egg genes .you have to wait tell she lay her first 30 eggs .
this first 30 eggs are a true indicator of the true genetic make up of the pullet.

this is very important .the first 30 eggs determine if the pullet is a breeder or a layer .it is a period where I select my future breeders .
