International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Poor hen..... well I will try to help her out. They do eat all the cat food they can steal! It is just that Antonio has been dealing with 11 hens all year. If it is his fault he must really like her.... beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Lol! Mine get some turkey grower too, since I have turkeys, but I keep out oyster shell free choice just in case. Turkeys have higher protein requirements. I'd use a breeder formula if I could find it. As it is, I topdress with seaweed, mix some turkey grower for bonus protein and vitamin mix, and in the winter I add our local Mill's special scratch mix( wheat, corn, peas, flax, sunflower, barley) for interest and extra energy for warmth. They also get table scraps when I have them.
I've found the seaweed made a difference in my chicks, especially since I don't have access to a true breeders formula.
And I have given catfood in the winter when they look rough. It's the first thing they eat.

She is probably his favorite for a reason.. maybe she is easier than the other girls.:p;)

I was not looking for easy. I have found nothing about MARANS easy. Mostly wanted Chooks man to comment, which he did. Was the exact answer I expected. " You never no what you are gonna get." The chances are better with a #8 than a #4. We all new that. I have never hatched one Marans egg, yet! I have been reading this thread and others for three years! What a wonderful trip. I have had yellow legs, white feathers, very dark eyes and coronation combs! "All from good stock." I now have 7 hens 14 pullets and three cocks. These are just "fair" birds. The plan is to start the incubator in March. I have an incubator from my Uncle George. I have built a brooder, and a separate hatcher out of wine cooler. Right now it is about 7 degrees outside with a high of 15. Its the north wind that get me. I love this thread and love you guys!! TOM

your birds are not just fair. they are much, much more than that. going towards perfect.

Some of my hens have started laying again. Amazing.... the shortest coldest days of the year! The eggs are darker than they are in this pic, darkest are near the bottom of the pic. I did take the pic with a flash. Can anyone tell me how to take good egg pics that reflect the right color?

I take the pics near the window with a lot of daylight. this way the colour is the closest to the real one.

When you have eggs as beautiful as yours I bet it is hard to take a bad picture.:love:highfive:
I think you’re right, daylight but not direct sun and white background

With the windy weather it's been very difficult to get any decent pictures, but I did manage to get a few over the holidays.
I've a pretty good idea at this stage of who is who, looks like we have 2 BCM cockerels and 7 pullets, 1 each of the silver cuckoos, 3 white cockerels and 5 pullets, and Pablo :)
The cuckoo guy seems to be shaping up to be the head boy - he's the best at crowing and likes to keep everyone else in line. He's also very muscly!
We're planning on separating the males but right now we're just keeping a close eye on them and they all get along fine. A couple of the bigger pullets will step in if there's any disagreements and there never seems to be any hard feelings.
The last picture is the coop in progress - we're still working on the walls but we let them try out the roosts and they seemed very happy!
