Thank you! I'm still getting caught up after missing a few days of post.
I have 1 question. There was mention of chick down and it being desirable. What make a Marans down desirable or not? What are people looking for exactly? Is it different for Black Copper, Blue Copper and Splash?
Ideally you want to see minimal white in the wings and on the face of BCM chicks. There are two different breeders I talk to via facebook and have learned a lot from them about showing birds. I will be sharing pictures of theirs I have saved from facebook, I'm sure they won't mind me sharing them for learning purposes. The first breeder is a little more strict on his Marans chicks and only likes to see a small amount of white by the beak and little to no white in the wing. Like me, he struggles with parasitic white in the underfluff of his cockerels as they mature so he feels that too much white as chicks correlates to white in the underfluff or feathers as the birds mature.
In this picture, the two frames on the left would be considered the ideal Marans chick. The chick has no white wing feathers and minimal white on the face. The chick pictured in the two frames on the right has quite a bit of white on the face and also has several white wing feathers. The chick on the right also has a white spot on the upper part of its head. One or two white wing feathers is okay as chicks, but you definitely want the white feathers to molt out as the bird matures and you want to see no white after the adult molt that occurs between a year and 18 months old.
This second picture below is from another breeder who believes that this chick pictured has the most white on the face that should be considered acceptable. A little white around the eye, and a little white beside the beak is completely fine.
