International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Nah that's how we learn. Tom taught me something new today, I'm constantly learning. :)
The thing is " I know nothing" I just repeat what I remember from reading the Marans threads. My point is all these top lines from top breeders are producing a lot of CULL birds. If we can not produce a lot of birds (30) birds per hen and cull 90% of those I do not Know that we can have ANY birds that met the SOP standard! TOM
ps. I am going to try

I hope they will be layers.
See the comb color on this Blue Copper. That is the same color of the splash pullets feet. Pink with a yellow hue. Maybe this will go away when older. Still probably not a good thing. When I say cull I always mean find a new home.

I'm right there with you, trying my darndest to improve these birds. A high volume of culls is definitely to be expected from any line, you are correct. At least we wont go hungry. Might broke feeding them, but never hungry with all the Marans we'll have in or freezers.

I am definitely broke! Let's see $15 a chick. About $20 a chick if you count shipping. I bought 2 batches of 12 chicks. That's almost $500 just in chicks. Then feed and supplies..... I better stop there! Lol

Look on the bottoms of that ones feet and go by that. If they're white/pink they're good. Yellow = bad. The darker legged birds its easier to tell by looking on the bottoms (soles) of the feet.

I'm not going to lie, I culled a line when I began with Marans for yellow shanks because I had no support other than people hollering at me to cull, cull, cull the entire line. Chooks man always advocates working with what you have. If you are going to be working with your birds to eventually sale and want to start over then that's one thing. If you are simply working with them for show or your own personal use, they're yours and what you do with them is up to you. Marans are a frustrating breed and no matter how anyone tries to spin it, you're going to see faults in any line. The fact is, you are never going to order eggs or chicks and get perfect chickens. Any bird you get will have faults, in one form or another. A recessive gene, is recessive gene, whether it be side sprigs, vulture hocks, yellow shanks, etc. They're there and will resurface, time and again. You have invested money and your blood, sweat, and tears into these chickens and I know your frustration. I've been there! If you decide to work with them we'll be here to support you. If you decide to cull and start over, we'll support you with that too.

If you want to work with what you have, cull the yellow legged ones and the hen(s) that produced them to your layer flock. Find another rooster, I'm sure I'll have one later that I could send you if you pay shipping. He wont be perfect but he wont have yellow shanks and my lines have never produced a bird with yellow shanks. Grow out your best pullets that have correct leg color and only use them. Always single mate that way you can pinpoint the origin of an issue easily. Wing band and record everything.

Mostly just for me. I want to improve the breed. I don't want to do anything that will harm future lines. The question is! Is this a line that can be worked with? Is this too bad of a fault? Do my birds have too many faults plus the yellow? I don't need perfect but I do want workable. Do my birds have enough good qualities to out way the bad? Any opinions? What would you all do if these where your birds?

I just messaged a friend of mine who has bred Marans for a long time and asked her. I will let you know what she says.

Me personally, if it were for my own personal use and I had no intention of selling them, I would work with them if their type and egg color were pretty good. I think so far your birds look good and aside from the yellow shanks I dont see any other problems. How is the egg color of the original hens?
