Yes I see that. They do look a lot alike. Beautiful color. Where does the Darwin line come from? Which country?

the only pure BCM line ho lay dark eggs 6. oval shape and shinny .

well bred line they all look alike . almost a same face .Darwin 1 and 2 and Elvis

Do you have Darwin hens?

Hi RedBank

look at Darwin2 hackle .lush ,great coppery color with a minimum of flame.

the flames in his hackle are thinner ,just on the bottom part and minimum .

he s better than his father Darwin 1 better tail .the rest all same .they look a like father and son.

here Darwin 1;

I see lightly feathered pink legs. Do the hens have darker legs? Darker ear tufts?

Sorry that wasn t his sister by his side . white tug ( Shakeara from Walker line )

here Darwinia .green tug .

her mam the larger hen ( not the one with a white tug) Daisy ,she is a sister to Darwin1 .

So Darwin2 and darwinia are true inbred line..

Daisy have less hackle and less sheen too . great type and lay dark egg 6and 5 .

fertility is a problem with them .that is pretty normal .

I ll restore them to they glory in few years .

Notice Darwinia shank are dark but with a pinkish hues between the toes .

Not completely dark slate all the way through . has to have some pink .that the trade Mark of the Marans. PINK HAS TO BE PRESENT even is a small quantity .

Notice as well both Daisy and her Daughter Darwinia have less sheen . flat ( dole ) Black.

can you explain the fertility problem? I tried to hatch more marams eggs but they didn't. I blamed the broody.

Hi Chickengr;

one of the main problem with inbred line are the fertility .especially from the roosters.

a study has been conducted to see what the difference in the fertility between inbreed line and a NO inbred line .

they mated a inbred line Rooster to his half sister and unrelated hens ( not inbred . forward mating method ) . the result of the hatching from both hens where a same about 80%.

than they Mated a inbred hens and a No inbred hens to a No inbred rooster . the result of the hatch from both hens where a same and higher 91%.

So the conclusion was that the inbred rooster loose they fertility BUT not a inbred hens .( they fertility stay high ) the genetic and the condition will affect they fertility .

with Darwin 1 and his sister Daisy I only managed to hatch about 50% . this line has been bred badly .the only thing good about t they kept t pure. that is an asset .

Selective breeding can fix that.
