International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Hi Chickengr;

one of the main problem with inbred line are the fertility .especially from the roosters.

a study has been conducted to see what the difference in the fertility between inbreed line and a NO inbred line .

they mated a inbred line Rooster to his half sister and unrelated hens ( not inbred . forward mating method ) . the result of the hatching from both hens where a same about 80%.

than they Mated a inbred hens and a No inbred hens to a No inbred rooster . the result of the hatch from both hens where a same and higher 91%.

So the conclusion was that the inbred rooster loose they fertility BUT not a inbred hens .( they fertility stay high ) the genetic and the condition will affect they fertility .

with Darwin 1 and his sister Daisy I only managed to hatch about 50% . this line has been bred badly .the only thing good about t they kept t pure. that is an asset .

Selective breeding can fix that.

thank you. that explains why the eggs didn't hatch. the breeder had a few roos with hens so my couple might have been related. I am afraid that my cockerel marco might be inbred. the breeder does change the roos every 1,5-2 years so I am praying.

Hi Chickengr .
inbred line is not bad if it done properly ( selective breeding) .80 % hatch from a stable line better than 100% hatch from a mix line ( newly paired line ) too much culling.

to avoid a quick inbreeding in any flock we have to mate a pullet to her grand sire not her sire for line breeding .and a cockerel to his grand ma not to his mam.

after 3 inbred generation I managed to reduce the size and the shape of the comb and maintaining the gorgeous copper color and type.

the f3 Wolf his s all what i want from this line ( Walker - W line-). 3 years of selective breeding from one Coq.

this are pure copper bred back ward 3 time and nothing has been added to them .they have a light slate and pinkish feet. for the rooster. slate to dark with pinkish bottom to the girls.

there no wheaten in here just selective breeding. haven t see anything rather than BCM chicks hatching from this line.

lighter shank does not automatically mean they have Wheaten on them .IS NOT TRUE.

I've just moved back to my home area and had a farm here when I was a kid. And am thinkin about starting it back up. I've read on them and they seem like a pretty good all around breed. Matching that of Rhode Island Red. Idk why no one in my area has them. Their large enough to deter most hawks and foxes. I think I'm gonna introduce them to the area. Tired of seeing reds and Dominiques. Lol.

Hi Jroberts go and get your self some marans .they are the greatest chooks . robust .heavy .lay nice dark egg 150 /180 eggs/years. the cockerel test fantastic ant 6 month ( 2 Kg carcass )

plus there is many varieties you can choose from ( not that easy ) but you can get some help and advice from the breeders of country.
