International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

LL

hey everyone thanks for the invite to the thread. I just started raising pure bcm's that I received at a chickenstock event from a BYC user, years ago now, who no longer raises them but username marsiquella. Anyways I raised those for awhile until my flock was attacked by dogs. :( One of my hens and her 2 offspring survived. I might/most likely will be getting rid of these 3. I picked up a dozen eggs in another state which are show quality but the hatch rate was low. I have those guys as chicks right now and ready to set another dozen show quality eggs soon. Though I myself do not show bcms. here's a pic of the rooster that survived but i'm not keeping. he did get badly bit around his neck area I think (I was not living here when it happened so I'm not super specific on what his injuries were at the time). poor guy.
you rooster is a giant great mass . his feathers are a lot fluffy ,they should tight .
gorgeous comb
nice short tail but a little high .
his shanks have too much feathers
nice red shouldrs

No bad strain .I ll work with him if I had him

Good luck with your hatching eggs ( most of the show bird have a low hatch rate .it is not quality neither fault .so for most of the breeders it is the last thing in they mind )

welcome!

poor chickens, sorry to hear about dog attack.

maybe you should not get rid of your chickens before you see what will hatch out..

Hi Chickengr.

I have been saying there is a difference in selective breeding method and multiplying chooks .

Totally two different things.

Most of the peoples think if they ll buy a faultless chooks ,than they don t have to worry .they can just breed them and get a faultless chooks .THAT is not true .will never work for more than a couples of years and they will run into troubles .

you think they know how marans should look? as long as they lay red eggs they are marans. a friend of mine sold some hatching eggs, 1 was no 8-9. when the eggs arrived the guy who bought eggs called my friend and shouted. in his opinion the egg was too dark, not good.

I'm going to apologize now, this is a very photo heavy post lol. I finally managed to get out and take pictures of everyone and couldn't decide which ones to post so I posted them all lol.

Voldemort was not being very cooperative for pictures but I finally got him to get out of the woods for a few decent ones. His tail is too high and he has sprigs on the back of his comb but he is a one season guy. One of his sons will replace him next year.

This is 3 of my 4 girls. Faith was nowhere to be found while I was taking pictures. Of course she came back out after I put the camera away.

This is Faith. Not the best pictures but I had to look up old ones of her.

my lucky guess (the beginner's one) is that faith is the best hen you have. I like her egg too.

here what I do think of this BCM rooster ;
type is good BUT need Width
Back sort causing the tail to be higher .
tail nice shape and form.
Comb very bad.
chest deep BUT need Width
His rear very narrow NOT forming the pyramid required .
Legs well feathered BUT on X shape ( they not strait )

Color is bad .he has less marking and his copper is too dark Mahogany
Dark shoulder.

He is bad and I do no see any hens from the 4 you have is going to correct his fault. they are dark too .
you will no see a copper coloring from this mating.

His type could be corrected ,.plus a comb too and the tail you have a hen to do it . BUT color you don t have.

he is only the rooster you have?

here my favorite hens . she look Birchen to me ( silver chest ) can you conform it please .

any way she the best there and you can get some solid ( nice cockerel as son ) from her.
great type ,well chunky ( she ll pass it to her progeny male and female )
great head .gorgeous eyes
pretty comb ( she is going to pass that to her son s )
deep and wide chest
solid neck
good wattles
nice long flat back .
great tail short and good angle
correct legs nice and strait well feathered . when you look at her standing her leg are well spaced and parallel to each other.

She have one problem her feathers are loose .fluffy . they should be tight . could be fixed not a big deal

I have hens like her in my Birchen line ..they gave me nice progeny
