International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

All of you have me grinning from ear to ear! I do feel pretty lucky! Remember I had nothing to do with this..... when my birds down the road lay this kind of egg then I will take the credit. But thanks everyone! It was an amazing find!

When I was posting the pictures on Marans Aspiran I saw a posting of two cockerels. One had a white feather in his tail, is this common? Does it appear as the cockerel matures? Can it appear and then disappear? Can it be caused by an injury?

this is a good question. I have noticed that my marans got some white feathers when they didn't feel well. marco lost a few white feathers on his feet that he had.

btw, there were too many posts to read last night and this morning, I had no time to comment them, lol the dark egg is incredible!

@Chooks man your roos are gorgeous indeed. is it possible that your roo is dominant white and splash at the same time?

I found this on the coop floor this afternoon covered in sand. It is not one of my old girls..... they have laid dark eggs but never like this. The egg next to it is one of the dark eggs from the photo this morning.
So perfect! Looks like one of the girls heard that it was your birthday haha. This egg deserves it own photoshoot.

Yeah RedBank the white feathers on the BCM or BLCM or SCM or BIR are a fault parasitic colors cause by the over crossing of the genes.

need to be bred out. the way to do it always choose one breeder without a parasitic feathers
( less penguiny type too much white on they hatch down) plus no white feathers on the wings. neither spotted white chest . all this fault can be seen in the stock as chicks.

to avoid this problem we have to breed from the the second year breeders .mean they passed the second molting . so we can see the true colors .

when they are sick they feathers can turn white too . but they need to have it in they genetic make up

Chickengr .

a dominant white is a modifier gene not a base color gene. can be over any color could be Splash underneath or BC .BLC .BIR .

my dominant white come from the splashes So I m separating the 2 varieties
Dominant pure white
pure Splash . I love the Splash

Is there any way to choose a quality marans as a chick?

I know you have mentioned bits and pieces of what you notice here and there, I am wondering about the visible characteristics of a good bird even when it is young.

What I have noted you mentioning is things like width between legs, chunkiness and less penguin type, these things are noticeable even when they are quite young.

Is there any other tips and tricks for choosing good chicks?

Thanks in advance.
