Nice egg color RedBanks! I guess I should have read all the post first - congrats on the #9 egg! You definitely have all the genes needed to advance your line. I bet your F2s will be exceptional.

Is there any way to choose a quality marans as a chick?
I know you have mentioned bits and pieces of what you notice here and there, I am wondering about the visible characteristics of a good bird even when it is young.
What I have noted you mentioning is things like width between legs, chunkiness and less penguin type, these things are noticeable even when they are quite young.
Is there any other tips and tricks for choosing good chicks?
Thanks in advance.
Quote: I know that Chooks Man does not like the penguin chicks but I think we would have a hard time here discounting them totally. They are pretty much all we see. For me the less cute, dusty black, soot colored chicks were my best. The funny thing is that when they went thru the awkward stage they were really gawky.
I am the last one to give an advice but my penguin type chicks turned out to be good, especially cockerel. I wouldn't discard penguin type chicks.
@RedBanks there is an interesting article about vaccination: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/tthis-chicken-vaccine-makes-virus-dangerous/
although, I must say, I bought a few birds vaccinated for marek's. none of birds hatched by my broodies has been vaccinated and I have never had marek's in my flock. I have never heard of any case of marek's on the island and half birds (hatchery) are vaccinated and another half is not.
I m not saying the penguiny type don t colors up nicely .
what I m saying they are the ones who carries the white feather genes. especially if they have too much white on they wings and face .
they should have a white only on they bally ,chest ,and the tip of they wings.
when chis only the white on the tip of the wings is normal .all the other presence of white ( even if does goes away after molting ) on the chest or any other part of the body are parasitic and should be bred out.
Look at this 2 chicks Blue copper marans . the one on the left has a correct color down .the one on the Right is a penguin type NOT correct too much white.
