International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

These are some of my chicks. They are a week shy of 4 months old. Hoping to keep 2 decent cockerels out of the 13
Pullet #1 all black. Thinking of trying to breed solid black Marans

Pullet #2. Like most of them but this particular girls tail is too high

Cockerel#1. Mostly black, came from an all black hen and proper coloured roo. He's a BIG boy. Weighs about 2 lbs more than most of the others

Alright, alright you guys have talked me into it Squeek lives. That is what the wife and I call this cockerel. He is our first Black Copper Marans. My feed is cheap and I have plenty of room. Tom

Good man here we breed chooks from the stock we have ,we don t kill every bird and we left with a empty pen.

be ready to put the work in and hatch some chicks from Squeek.
you are only a step away from a great maran type if you will mate Squeek to a nicer hen ( great comb if possible ) .

This is "Wry Tail" who would have been my 2nd choice and will sadly be heading to freezer camp. I am afraid that his cons out weigh any pros. But thought i would share so that you could see why I chose Henri as my main man. I have 5 other boys that also pale in comparison even if they do have a better set tail. They race around so quickly it is hard to get good picks.

he is a hand some chunky boy . his tail is wry but it is a recessive gene could be bred out in a couple of generation

his tail doesn t bother me .what bother me is the way he is walking .look to me his leg aren t strait.

photos of him standing from the front and the rear to conform .please .

DO NO MATE HIM TO A BLACK HENS he carry access of Mahogany .and will wild a lot black one.

I ll mate him to a straw colored hackle hen with a great tail. = we will get the F1 generation .
year 2 mate the best of this F1 generation to get =F2 . from this F2 progeny you can make your selection by picking the best ones.

That is something I just need to learn to do. When the pullet was killed by the predator the other night I came close. She was dead, she was still limp and I thought I should clean this bird and eat her. I called my neighbor and gave her to him but I am getting better about all this. I need to be eating them. I have given about 30 away.

RedBank you are missing out .
the marans chooks are very testy .
you have to eat your work is noble . don t rise chooks and end up eating the one from the store .
