International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

My birds were hatched 08/16/16, so makes them just under 19 weeks. I know there is often a large variation of laying ages dependent on what line they're from but how likely would it be that my pullet will lay anytime soon? I've not been able to find anything about marans pullets POL in winter. While I'm at it, my true Ameraucana and CCLs are the same age, so if you know anything about those breeds in terms of winter POL please feel free to share.

they will probably start laying in spring.

pure breeds usually start laying at age of 6-7 months, at least where I live. there might be some delay if they come to that age in winter.

My Black Coppers are 6 and 7 months (24-30+ weeks) and no eggs from them yet. None of my Marans are laying right now as a matter of fact. My 8 month old Splash pullets and my 1 year old Splash laid well up through fall and then stopped when it started getting cold. They are pretty poor winter layers from what I have heard so don't expect your first egg from her before spring. You may get lucky but I'm still waiting for my black coppers' first eggs.

Marans typically reach point of lay around 24-30 weeks if they are born early in the year, but if they reach POL during cold months they won't lay their first egg until spring usually.

Okay great! Now I know I don't have to be waiting with baited breath. I'll start looking for eggs from all 3 breeds end of January through February. currently we have 9.5 hours sunrise to sunset. End of Jan we'll have closer to 10.25 hours. End of Feb They'll be 28 weeks old and we'll have 11.5 hours.

One or two of my cockerels from my LA group had the white stipling on their breast at first also but it molted out. White is nothing to worry about when they're babies. He has nice eye color and they all seem very healthy and vigorous.

The pullet has brown eyes but eye color comes from the male in a breeding so if she has good type you can still use her.

Thanks, I always appreciate having a second opinion.

Happy holidays to all of you!

It is speculative not a true genetic. I heard it as well .that a Black copper coming out of the crossing between a black copper and blue copper are not good . NO sense . The blue gene if is there will show up ,if it is not it it not does not dilute any thing if is not there . what happen a lot people are color blind and they don t know it that all .they mi up the really blue to a washed out black . a Blue copper and a black copper can run together all the time and they will yield a great result .as long as the selection is always accurate . no color blind thing . most of the good breeders I know in France they run them together permanently .. we have to select any way i=even if we only breed a black copper to a black copper . by the way the Black copper marans and the black marans they shouldn t have a shiny Black feathers only on the upper body ( Back ,the wing and the tail fathers the rest of the body should be Flat black . a lot people say a lot thing about the marans breed witch are not true . chooks man

I went out and took photos today. I don't know how you guys have so many good pictures of your chickens. Believe it or not, these are the best pictures I could get out of many attempts.

Remember these guys are 19 weeks old. Please notate any obvious faults and possible good things. All I have at the moment are a Blue Copper Cockerel and a Black Copper Pullet. They would be the two I would be breeding together starting out.

To me, my cockerel has a flat chest. It looks strange to me. If I had to describe it, I would say his chest looks 'droopy'. But I don't know much. Okay here goes!

Cockerel

Tail Spread, kind of windy so picture might be useless

Here's the Pullet. To me she looks good. I think she has good shape. Don't really see much wrong with her. That's one of the reasons I'm posting, to have you help me determine what I'm looking at :D

This pic makes her tail look really high, she's actually wagging her tail and I caught the pic as it swung to her left side
