International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Morning all. I hatched another F1 chick yesterday. A little pullet I believe! She has a black beak and darker feet. Her little comb is to dark; I suspect she will be overmelanized like her mother. I was hoping Zorro would give Hazel's chicks some color on their hackle. Will have to see. Pros are Cinnamon has less white flakes on her face than her mother, and Zorro put feathers on her shanks. Hazel (her mother) has little to no shank feathering. However, there are a few little white feathers on her middle toe, so not good there. Onyx defiantly is producing a better chick all around than Hazel. Also was able to hatch one silver cuckoo marans chick! So excited about adding another variety to my little flock. I think maybe a cockerel, but chooks man can correct me if I am wrong. Named him Radar.

Thanks for teaching us with pictures of your chooks. Scheherazade is gorgeous!! Wow, wow those copper ear tufts. She is very special.

Look up April Howington on Facebook. She has Bev Davis's line of birds and she shows eggs and birds. Her egg color is very nice. She is in Texas, but I'm not sure what area. You can join the Marans Central group on Facebook also, it is a buy, sale, auction page. There are a lot of good Marans breeders in Texas. :)
I will! Thanks for the advise

They are a real challenge aren't they! If I wasn't trying to perfect them there isn't a breed I like better. I love the mumbling and talking. The way they follow me all over the yard and come running when they see me (all food motivated).

I have one hen that lays a very long egg, so long you can't close the egg carton but it is not a double yolk. Should I hatch an odd egg like that?

Odd shaped eggs may not hatch as well but it would be worth a shot.

If the hen has exceptional egg color and other good qualities, egg shape can can be corrected each generation as with anything else. One of my blue copper pullets lays a longer shaped egg, similar in shape to her splash copper mother but improved upon in color. I will be setting her eggs anyway because she is a lovely pullet. Her eggs aren't abnormally long, but more slender looking in comparison to my black copper eggs.
