International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Morning all. I hatched another F1 chick yesterday. A little pullet I believe! She has a black beak and darker feet. Her little comb is to dark; I suspect she will be overmelanized like her mother. I was hoping Zorro would give Hazel's chicks some color on their hackle. Will have to see. Pros are Cinnamon has less white flakes on her face than her mother, and Zorro put feathers on her shanks. Hazel (her mother) has little to no shank feathering. However, there are a few little white feathers on her middle toe, so not good there. Onyx defiantly is producing a better chick all around than Hazel. Also was able to hatch one silver cuckoo marans chick! So excited about adding another variety to my little flock. I think maybe a cockerel, but chooks man can correct me if I am wrong. Named him Radar.

Cuties! Congratulations!! :D

Are they Cuckoo Marans?

Just dropping in to say that the eggs I got from Monique have been hatching! I have 17 chicks so far and maybe one or two more :)
There are a few different varieties, Black Copper, White, and 'Coucou a camail argenté', I'm not sure what that is in English? And some eggs she wasn't sure what they were, so it will be a surprise!
They started hatching on Tuesday and unfortunately I've mostly been at work and my husband is looking after them. I'll do a proper review of them at the weekend and post some pictures.

Would that translate to silver cuckoo? I typed it into google translate and only the words "Coucour" and "argente" were able to be translated. Coucour = cuckoo, and argente = silver. So Silver Cuckoo. Chooks man will know more about it.

Congratulations on your hatch! I am just green with envy! Monique is an amazing Marans breeder. To be able to obtain eggs directly from France is just amazing! You are very lucky indeed. :)

Our gamecocks are that way, they will fight to the death so we have to keep them separated. Usually the younger Marans cockerels and the Legbar keep away from the Gamecocks, as they know they are outmatched. So it worried me when the Legbar (named Fabio) had picked a fight with a gamecock tied out, because the cock bird was older than him and Fabio wasn't backing down as he normally does. I worry it may not have ended well had I not put Fabio up.

Some males of even heavy breeds are just more confrontational than others, especially when they are protecting their harem of ladies.
I also have a legbar named Fabio.

As you can see, Fabio is named for his long, flowing locks( fabulous feather crest). His earlobes aren't real great, but that crest combined with the straight comb, even with the faults, made him worth keeping as a breeder. His sons don't have floppy combs either. He's well shaped, although he has a lot of gold, and quite a bit of Chestnut through the wings and crest.

Thanks! Yeah, very lucky indeed, and Monique was so lovely. I've been holding my breath for these eggs, I'm so glad they're hatching!

I guess it would be a cuckoo with silver hackles, so you're probably right :)
