International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

here few photos of my BCM this year pullets ,aged between 8 to 10 months .
16 pullets are selected and separated from the rest of the pullets . they are going to be single mated to they half brothers to see which combination work better .
all this 16 pullets are selected for type ,mass ( 2.6 Kg for the youngest one and 3Kg for the oldest and heaviest ) , width of they shoulder and back . length of they back . color of they eggs .angle and shape of they tail.
they all excel in those points .
they weakest point on some of them are .hackle marking ( not enough but not all black)
color of they eyes .some have brown /marble eyes
shank feathers ,some of them don t have them .
all those points could be fix by the Sire any way .the cockerels I selected are good on those point

some people believe if the pullet/hen have a thin pointed tail that will make they back narrower at the end where the tail start .
that is not true .
look at my pullets ,they all are selected for a thin pointed tail but wide at the shoulder all the length of they back
very clear in this last photo
plus they all have a wide rear and most of they are shorter on they feet .

what left to do now is fix the body color . adding a gorgeous hackle to they progeny .

I wish I had so many nice looking pullets to choose from. Maybe next year..

I like the pointed tails as it looks more elegant than the big fan tails a lot of my birds have. Your girls have beautiful long backs and good tail angles. I hope to see grow outs like this in my yard in the spring. :)

you ll get there ,just select the nicest pullets .
those pullets will give you nice cockerels .

we are talking body type NOT body color .

he was selected for that reason .and the richness of his copper .
his mama Norway has a true marans type body , and dark oval eggs too .her mama passes 3.6Kg , his grand mama 3,5 Kg and his grand grand mama Scandinavia 4.2Kg
they are not light weight those chooks .but they still have they own faults .
no perfect chooks in my farm yet ,all work in progress .I ll get there one day .

SELECT THE LARGE HEN IF YOU WANT TO INCREASE THE MASS OF YOU CHOOKS

The last pullet I put up the other day that I posted pictures of is the largest I have up to breed so far. I am really hoping she throws big chunky cockerels like yours. And the chunkier the birds, the more the meat when we process the culls. They are a dual purpose breed after all. I need to get a good scale and start recording the weights of my birds also.

here my splash pullets 8 selected . all gorgeous
I love this variety
nice rectangular body type .
RedBank go made for those marans body type .
enjoy my friend

yeah she look chunky to me .if you tell me her exact age and exact weight I can tell you what will be the weight ( mass ) of her progeny ?
any marans pullet who reaches a 2.5 Kg at 6 months when she start laying is a good specimen to increase the mass on her cockerels progeny .

I will tell you all how Marans crazy I am. I had a dream last night about my free-ranging Marans pullets. I dreamed I was looking for their first eggs, and I was finding them everywhere in the weirdest places. I was finding eggs in the dog house and in the flower beds.

Even in my sleep I have chooks on the brain. :lau

hope your dream will come true .and you ll find all those marans eggs .
I don t know about marans X dog what are going a get out of them .
I have done that crossing yet .HaHahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

They are absolutely stunning! I long for type and tails like that in my birds. :love

you only need one pullet with a nice thin pointed tail .and breed from her for that trait only . very important .specially if you fancy showing in the future .
one line for the egg color
second line for the body type
third line for the eye and tail set
forth line for body color

doesn t mean you need to have 4 pens and each pen is loaded with gorgeous chooks .what I mean you need to have one pair who can throw progeny fit one of this goals .
different combination . that all
if you have a trap nest you can use just one pen with all the hens in it and retale 3 or 4 rooster in one breeding season .
that will give you many line from a same pens .
easy to tug as well too
