International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

When I had all those young cockerels I didn't look at Antonio at all, as a matter of fact I had made my mind up about him and was going to give him to my chicken eating friend down the road. I was looking at Claude and a couple of others. Then Chooks man started giving me lessons and changed my eye/thinking. Of course, Chooks man was stuck on Claude but if he could have seen him in person he would not have been. Claude was small. Now Antonio is such an impressive rooster wide and gives the impression of strength but not overdone. That is what I see in Griffin so you will have to keep me posted on how he turns out.

I will definitely keep you posted. Here is a more recent pic of him i took yesterday. The other pic was taken a while ago. I love him because out of the 3 he has the best personality and I can pick him up whenever I want. He's a big pet. I do see him filling out to be a nice cockerel and I do like his back and tail angle, so he stays. He is a big wide bird also and is huge. Pictures dont do his size justice.

he need more shoulder color .his autosome linked color genes are not his best asset .
but I love every thing about him .
he ll fix the tail problem you are having too .
love his long back

his hackle and a luck of the shoulder coloring plus the comb are not his strongest thing .

that will be great .
pullet with a darkest hackle ( Mahogany type ) and if possible not black ears tuft ( very hard to find ) and spotted chest .
those traits are Autossomal Red genes .both cockerel and pullet can passes those genes to they progeny males and females .

Has anyone noticed that the Marans with shorter tails tend to have better tail angle ? Seems as though the longer tail Marans have a more tight tail without the openness we are looking for. Seems as though the longer tail Marans have more problems with the Tail angle being high.

agree with you the long tail marans have all sort of problems .
marans hen with a short tail opened at the bottom and close at the top ( pointed tail) tend to throw cockerels with a nice short tail forming the desired pyramid shape tail . open at the base but at the top .

Marans hen with a long square tail tend to throw cockerel with open tail and too long (squirrel type tail ).

marans hen with a long tail close all the way to the top ( not open at the base) tend to throw cockerel with a wry tail

there is a lot study done regarding the genes responsible for tail ,and what the order of they dominance .
most of them are sex linked any way .
the hen has a lot to do with a tail type we are looking for .

Took a quick pic of this cute little fella today. He wouldnt stand still long enough to get a good full body shot, but he looks to have the best comb so far. He is one of Apollo and #60's chicks. Looks like I have 5 or 6 cockerels from them and at least that many pullets.

Tail set - is it not desirable to have an open / fanned tail in the roo for this breed? My Chester has what I think is open and previous feedback was complimenting his angle. Still waiting for him to grow up but shopping for his ladies.

Kfelton- your boy is gorgeous but I notice his eye color is dark. Did that turn as he grew up? I'm about to hand off a cockerel whose eyes just got marbled but has a rich copper color because of his eyes. I think from what I read that rich color is over Melanized and also why i stick with the feedback to use Chester to start.

Tail: strong at its base, quite short, fairly up without going over 45 °
THE SHAPE OF THE TAIL
A good Marans (cocks and hens) should always have a short tail, tilted 45° to a horizontal, but still acceptable to a 60° maximum. It is the 45° slope, which is called for in the Standard. Beyond 60°, the tail appears much too vertical, and the back is very
often too short, and the bird then lacks the minimum mass necessary for a good Marans.

To describe good tails in the Marans it is advisable to join together two essential characteristics, which are:

- Main tail feathers tighter and shorter than average.

- Sickles shorter than average.

With respect to the hens, the tail is broad at the base (sitting naturally well with a full body), but it must be seen to be rather short and fine having tight, not open feathering. Presence of a "Fan tail " is a serious defect.

That cockerel is still just a baby, still chirping. He is only 9-10 weeks old and his eyes are green which is good for that age. His father has beautiful eye color, so I expect this cockerel will also.

marans chick with a blue /green eyes will end up having bright orange eyes when fully mature .
great way to select for the good eyes at the young age .
