International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Remember I was never really sold on Tony2 so I am okay with it. If he was the only option I could live with it but he isn't. Doesn't he look like Amanda's roosters to you?

Sorry to hear about your cockerel. Does your RedBanks cockerel have a high/big tail?

He does look a lot like Amanda's LP rooster, I think. I'm glad you have lots more roosters to pick through. I just penned all my cull cockerels in the bachelor pen I opened up. They will make wonderful chicken and dumplings, grilled BBQ chicken leg quarters, and homemade chicken soup. :)

My Redbanks cockerel does have a high tail unfortunately, but if I can't use him I will still get plenty of use out of the pullet. So far she looks good. I need to take updated pics. I will try to do that ASAP! I have been so very busy because the man who does the NPIP testing called to tell me he may be here next Thursday or Friday to test my birds so I have been making sure everything is in order.

He is so nice.

he turn up to be a gorgeous rooster ,the only one from that line .

I had one hen from my friend that I hatched chicks from. Chicks 4&5 could be chicks from them. Rooster being Pure Bev. My friend has very nice Marans. So will try working with the two lines.

Wow they look great! Big robust and very healthy looking. I have found that Marans chicks are very sturdy, definitely more so than my Legbars and even the Games.

Thank you Chooks man, I have a few more eggs in the incubator and I am going to add about 8 more tomorrow. I hope for a better hatch. What ever I end up hatching will be all I hatch for the year. I hope I get a couple more splash. This is the first time I have had a splash. I still have a order in for Birchen and Blue Birchen Marans. Plus a few more pure Bev Blue Coppers coming. That should give me enough to keep me buisy.

Thank you, Marans are definitely my favorite. So friendly, sturdy, large eggs and good eating. What is not to like about them? I absolutely love them. If my Lavender Ameraucana rooster ends up infertile. I will add the lavender hens in with my Marans for olive eggers. Then use the lavender pen for a breeding pen. Maybe a splash rooster over some Black Copper hens. If I get a nice Splash rooster.

Look what I caught last night. Glad its finally gone! This one never bothered my chickens that I know of but it always stole my cat's food. I baited the trap with dog food and half a cheeseburger! :lol:View attachment 1298490

is that opossum? we don't have them.

correct the tail angle first ,than work of the shape later .

small tail is easier to correct ,take less time to breed it true ,you only have have to select a hen with a nice small pointed tail as your main breeder for this trait . cross back her best son to her and create line from her .

I used this method to fix the tail in my flock in just few years of breeding .now I m breeding it as a true trait ( dominant ).

you guys focusing too much on the cockerels and you are forgotten the importance of the pullets/hens in the breeding program .MAMA hen has a lot to say .
mama hen dictate the sex of the chick.
mama hen dictate the type of the chick,
mama hen dictate the size of the chick,
mama hen dictate most of the tail genes to the progeny,
mama hen dictate the laying type of the of spring,
mama hen transmit all her Sex Linked genes to her male off spring ,

PLUS MAMA HEN LAY THE EGG

thanks, this is a relief. my pullets are fairly good. I have 3 black ones but my boys will fix it.

Yeah its an opossum (we call them possums). We have an abundance of them here in the US. They are North America's only native marsupial, so they are interesting creatures. But however interesting, I like them to be far away from my chickens. They are chicken killers for sure. I would be devastated if one killed an important bird. Our pens are pretty secure, but we are still working on the fence so the dogs can't run free yet for their own safety, so we have to ensure the chickens stay safe in the mean time.
