International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Thank you, i got all the mossy chicks tagged ready to grow up under the micro scope, but i for sure won't be using any in with my breeders. Well it's a beautiful Saturday down here in south Mississippi and I'm about to go hit the flea markets and chickens swaps for the day.

Yay that sounds like fun! Have a great day! :)

Better pictures of Jupiter, who is the front runner of my A line for now.

He is lacking in his breast, nothing new for that line, but my plan is to mate him back to his mother, Sheraz later in the year. Sheraz is a very popular girl. I can then blend the offspring from that mating with the offspring from the Mashburn cockerel to improve the white and breast hopefully. The Mashburn cockerel will help both I think.
He has nice back length. He looks good.

Back on topic.. I took some pics of my blue copper grow outs today. I'm really happy so far with them. I love their lacing! Their type and mass look good so far too. :)

Nice, I think the blue copper are the most elegant of all the marans variety, especially the lady blue coppers. All class!! and I'm super jealous, one of my main reasons for getting the splashes i got is to try and establish a blue copper line. You just can't find good quality around my way. I drove 250 miles twice to get the chicks i just got trying to find quality. I'm hoping these will be the ones that finally jump start my breeding program.

I asked Monique Bertie to look at the cockerels. She said not to use the cockerel in the second picture because of the halo. She liked the cockerel in the first picture.

welp. Still don't have my chicks. 1st time breeder asked me if I wanted to hold off I suspect it was because half the country was frozen (I'm in NH and they are coming from California). Last week she reached out and said her hatch wasn't as good as normal. I really like this breeder and the focus they put on healthy birds balanced with acceptable standard. So I wait. In the meantime I go to runnings unsupervised twice. First time I come home with 2 polish. Yesterday I come home with 2 salmon faverolles. Because they will make good roomies for the silkies I have coming. Now my breeder coop is a silly fancy feathered coop. Now I need another coop. I sure hope this is the week. I can only build so many coops!

I don't recall any discussion about halos here yet. I can't help but wonder how it is any different than any other fault to be worked on. What happened to chooks?! I think he has become a legend at this point...

Chester is pretty big now. I'm guessing 8lbs. Once we got rid of the bantam roo he has sprout his manliness. His crow sounds like that video death metal rooster. It's so bad it's hilarious. He doesn't normally carry his tail this high. Just when he goes in alert mode (like when I come along with a camera). His feathers are starting to settle since he isn't getting spanked multiple times a day either. That white feather went away on its own but his underfluff is quite light. Darn near white everywhere. I still think he will be my starting point. I have black coppers coming and like the idea of being able to get blue and splash on the next gen. And I just filled what would have been my second cockerel coop with fancy feathered birds as I have no self control. Chester really did have a perfect comb and waddle until frostbite claimed them.

Edit to add: slicked his legs with Vaseline as I saw his legs were starting to look scaled.
