International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Thank you @RedBanks and everyone else for your help and critiques! I very much appreciate your help with this.

Green (now Hercules) will get the two darkest ladies. Black will get the two girls with more copper. My friend has had a set back and may gave Merek's in his flock :( I will hold Blue for a little bit for him until he knows for sure. It's an unfortunate situation for him and I hope it's not Merek's.

:fl for your friend.

love the name hercules. there is a city in crete named after hercules: heraclion (pronounced eerakleo, eeraklis-hercules).

@Auroradream26 I looked at the pictures again and I like black for 3rd place. His back is longer than blue even though they both appear to have high tails. Even though purple doesnt have the nicest comb, his type is better than black, blue, and red. Yellow is out for me because of carnation comb. Red's type is not good at all, he stands too upright and lacks greatly in breast depth, throwing both his type and bottom line off big time. The slope of his back is at to steep an angle.

1. Green
2. Purple
3. Black
4. Blue
5. Red
6. Yellow

Sorry I have to rush! Gotta get ready for work. :)

would purple boy and nicely coloured girls produce girls with yellow hackles?

Here is my best cockerel so far this year pending the rest of my young birds to grow out. He is the smallest of his brothers but still a good solid bird. He is 6 months old. His back could be flatter, but his tail angle and general type alone will be an asset to my breeding program. He might possibly end up in a show cage in Nov/Dec. No he isnt perfect by any means, but they're improving and that is what drives me with this breed. :)

I love his comb!

he looks much better than some cockerels in the french shows.

If he develops a halo he may pass on the halo. A well colored male or over colored male mated to well colored females tends to produce mossy chicks and cockerels with a lot if chest leakage from my own personal experience.

Males with halos can pass on the halo to both male and female chicks. Females pass on coloring to their sons.

In the picture I posted of Blue do you recognize the cockerel standing behind him? Chooks man had a beautiful rooster named Hercules! Good name.

I am terrified to bring adult birds into my yard. Or when I take one of my own somewhere and bring it back.

I THINK the roo behind Blue in that picture is Red.

It is hard to pick your top cockerels, well for that matter anybody's, with pictures. The one thing I know is they can really fall apart or come together as they mature. My favorite in the last hatch I had didn't end up being the best cockerel I had, Antonio killed the best cockerel. I would keep my top 3 or 4 for a little while longer, of course I think Hercules will continue to be your top cockerel. They are very nice birds. It will be fun to see them mature. You will have to keep the pictures coming so we can learn from our descriptions. You have the advantage when you look at your birds because you know your lines. We can "describe" your top picks with 4 photos. Side, top, front and back. Also I like a close up head shot. Chooks man said we don't critique, we describe. What I liked about that exercise is we went down the bird head to foot against the sop. I will do Hercules when I come home.

It's so hard to get good pictures of them, they're so uncooperative lol. I'm still fairly new and this was the first group that I actually bred to keep for breeding. I'm still learning what to look for. I know what the comb and tail SHOULD look like but I'm still learning how type should look. I very much appreciate that you guys are here to help :)
