International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I was at the Italian national poultry championships in Dec. 2018. Here are a couple Marans.

This Black Copper Maran rooster took Best of Breed with a score of D96 (Distinguished, 96 points. Maximum possible score at this show was E97, Excellent 97 points).

The two comments the judges made of things that could be better were something about the lobe of the comb (I can't make out the word in my photo of the cage tag) and tail is a bit high.

This Black Maran hen scored B92 (Buono, Good, 92 points). The one noted defect was that the comb is irregular, also things that could be improved was the white in the leg feathers, and something about the ears. They said the general form and shape are good.

If you're interested, I'm posting lots of photos from that show in this thread:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/italian-national-poultry-championship-dec-2018.1288055

the lobe of the comb is a back part of it .should be lifted not touching the neck .

this rooster has too many majors faults .can not score D96.
here the fault I see . his shoulders are not fully coloured . they are patches of red not a uniform rich red copper { Mahogany type } shoulder . very very very important .
he look small to me ,but he is caged and not relax .so I can not tell his tail and over all look . but he is not pretty for sure .

I like his comb ,has a great point .texture
love his rich red copper ,hackle and lancets .will be nice if he has a red shoulders .

the Hen I agree with a judges but not with they score .
the comb is bad
the earlobe are grey /white { Sablee' in French} disqualify
parasitic white feathers on her legs is a disqualify .

she should be disqualify . but I understand it is hard for the judges in the small show .they try to encourage peoples .so my hat to them . they are doing the best they can ,

they are plum trees .
now they have so much rotting fruit ,the chooks love them ,great place for the choks .a lot of shade ,shelter from a wind and rain ,plus they are free to do any thing ,we don t close they coop at night ,so they are free to come in and out any time they like . they come out of they coop when still dark at the morning .not all of them ,there is the late sleeper .lazy ones .

choks man

do you have foxes there? I would like to have the coops open but I am afraid that my dogs would not be able to cover all the coops.

I have heard of a farm that had 80 meters long coops with different breeds. this year there was a lot of snow and the whole construction fell down and killed all but 3 chickens. I am rethinking how to make coops as it might snow where I am going to move.

It's actually the largest show in Italy, the National Championships, so they should have the best judges available. I don't know about judging, so I can't pass judgement. :D

The judges comments on the cage tag are a bit hard for me to decipher. I read Italian, but I'm not good with the handwriting (letter forms are different than in American English, I never got the hang of the handwritten script).... But it looks like the grades are: (B=buono, good. MB=molto buono, very good)
B type
MB form
B deportment
B posture
MB struture
MB taglia (could be dimension, form, or measurement, I'm not sure)
MB colore

Points that could be improved
lobe of the crest should be less (can't make out the word)
Tail a bit too high

Here's another photo of him:

And here are a couple more shots of the hen, sorry, they're not in good focus.

There were a couple dozen black copper Marans in the show, split about equally between hens and roosters. scores ranged from three that were "insufficient", so no score, two that were "sufficient", 90 points, the others ranged from 91 to 96.

Quite a number of the birds in the show were available for purchase, including eight of the black copper Marans, but not the ones in my photos. The ones for sale ranged from B91 to MB 95, but all for the same price, €50.00, or about $57 U.S.

There were also a couple of blue copper Marans, and four silver black (nera argentata)
Scoring:

Scoring for this hen:
The following were all B- type, form, comportment, taglia (see note above) and structure.
Things that could be improved - ears and ? (can't make it out, looks like "rossi"), white in the feet (literally in the socks)
Defects: crest is irregular

You can find the Italian standard on this page, scroll down. Even if you don't know the language some of it should make sense, and you can run it through Google Translate.

I do have foxes but they don t came close to the place .a Dog is doing great job .

if there is snow in the new area you are going to build your house ,than design the coop for the snow .

chicken don t care if the coop is open or close as long as they have a lot space to move around .

Things that could be improved - ears and ? (can't make it out, looks like "rossi") - it says: ear lobes should be more red.

Help! I went out and the batchelor pen had been fighting. One of the roosters is in real bad shape. Lost a lot of blood. He is bleeding from the points on his comb and possibly the back of comb. I tryed putting the stop bleeding powder on him but it made it worse. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
