Thank you Chooks Man! Your advice is what I most appreciate on this thread. TOM
you welcome .just sharing my knowledge with you guys .
to breed for dark eggs trait . we need for a start dark fertile eggs or a dark egg layer hen .if we are working with a shipped egg . than we have to mark the darkest ones , and we have to make sure we mark the chicks that hatched from those dark eggs .
if we end up with a cockerel and few pullets from those dark eggs ,we are lucky .we mate those chooks .they could be related if they come from a same breeder .good thing for us .
even if the pullets that hatched from dark egg doesn t lay dark ones her self ,that is ok ,as long as we mate her to cockerel from a same dark egg . same line .we are fine .the genes will recombine differently in the next generation .and we should have some dark egg layer in the F2 generation .
some time we lose the dark egg in the first crossing .will reappear in the second generation .
if we are working with a hen /pullet that lay dark egg ,more easier than shipped eggs .
we breed this hen/pullet to a cockerel { better if him self come out of dark egg} .
we hatch few chicks from her .and select 3/4 cockerels .
next year we mate those 3/4 cockerels to they dam . each time we mark the chicks .when grown we select the best 2/3 cockerel and they best sisters { dark eggs layer if possible}
next year we breed the Mama hen to her Grand Sons . to make the BC2 { Back cross 2} and we mate the best pullets to they sires .
this method only work if we keep working with 2 to 4 cockerel each season .because we never know which cockerel carries all the genes we need .
line breeding for dark egg trait is the only way to achieve the desirable result .
out crossing the line is the worst thing the person can do if the dark egg we want .
