@BenTN

Agree with you on pullet in front .correct and stunning body type and tail .leg length and feathering .
Fault = hackle marking is missing .her eyes are dark .

don t work with a high tail pullet ,except if she lay better eggs than her 2 sisters .

3 pullets I am working with.

Top forward has good type but nearly no copper in hackle and good tail angle.

Top rear has good type but nearly no copper in hackle and high tail.

Pic 2 has most of what I am looking for, type, hackle color, low tail.

All birds need help in the comb Dept. Hopefully I can stay ahead of the tail angle and bring in better hackle on the hens.

What do you think?

Ben

tell me the story of your choks so I can help you breeding them .they look relatted to me .they have a same traits .

if I had them I ll pair hen #1 and hen #3 with Rooster #1 . they will produce 100% correct body type and tail angle .better comb .still big . BODY TYPE PEN

now you need a cockerel from different line .well coloured ,with a complete body patttern and small comb .@Marchick has a well coloured Blue copper line ,correct on type too ,see if she can help you with some eggs in the future .

Rooster #1 and Hen #2 high tail I will no work with .

Thanks Chooks man, all these birds are half siblings from a person who was working with both Greenfire and Mashburn lines. I do need to introduce some outside/small comb genetics. I don’t think I could ever breed away from it, line breeding this group.

Both Roos have a borderline leg spacing/stance. They are not knock kneed but legs are not well spaced for birds their size. Roo 1 has the orange eye(bad lighting in these pics as sun was setting), roo 2 is orange but darker.

You mentioned putting roo 1 over hen 1 and 3. Did you mean roo 2 for tail angle? Roo 1 tail angle concerns me. If you were to keep just one roo and breed a generation forward before introducing new genetics, which roo would you use? Looking to get a couple more good hens by next fall from this line.

Marchick does have beautiful birds, maybe I could convince her to sell a doz for a spring hatch.

Thanks again for your input Chooks Man, your direction is very much respected and appreciated.

sorry I ment Roo#2 over hen #1 and #3 .mark this trio as body type breeders .I really like they type and the correct tail .
a lot peoples are focussing on egg colour and they forget about the correct body type ,it is very important .the marans hens should look like marans and lay dark eggs .
good new they eyes are not dark ,we see properly in the photos .

Marchick will be keen to help for sure .do no introduce unknown line . will bring it own problems .

I love to the progeny of your Roo #2 over the hen #1 & #3 .they will have a proper conformation .100%

looks to me she has side sprigs.

Yup. I didn’t get pictures but I threw some scratch and saw what looks like side sprigs on all three. Argggg!!! These combs...

So I have not seen them on any of the Roos from that batch. How detrimental are side sprigs? Obviously a fault that I don’t want but it’s all I got to work with.

I think I will definitely be looking for hatching eggs in a couple months.

don t worry about side sprigs for the moment .your trio like I said is body type breeders ,no comb breeders .
we are not looking at them from the show point of view .we are looking at them to pair them , who is compatable to who . who complete the other .Rooster #2 and hens#1 &#3 are made for each other . build a house first than start looking to decorate it .

we don t have a perfect chooks to work with but we have chooks with good traits and bad one too ,so it is our job as breeders to fix those thing .put the good traits together and breed out the bad one .doesn t happen over night ,need years of planning and breeding .

some time we get wrong ,other time we get it alright .
