International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Starting to see the copper in one of the chicks... will be interesting to see how they end up looking as adults...

Fun Question: What is the age of the oldest Maran you have ever had either living now or in the past?

Just curious. 🙃

Scandinavia .Birchen marans hen .we got it in 2010 she was about 2 years old and died 2017 .cause of death heat stress 44 degree . nothing was wrong with her , big heavy hen 4.2kg .

Queen is my oldest Marans now. Thats the best picture I could get. She wouldn't pose. I will have to double check the book but I think she is 5.

She isnt the oldest bird on the place by far. We have an old American Game hen that is 17 years old! She is still mean as snot and even laid 4 eggs this year. She can't be housed with any other hens because she fights like a game rooster and won't stop. She will even try to fight roosters if they dont suit her taste. Lol

My oldest hen is a 5 year old Hatchery Non SOP Ameraucana (EE) and has to be housed alone for the same reason... at least I am not alone with killer hen, she can free range and be with hens but house her with a rooster and dead rooster.

I have a question.
As you know, i culled my flock because of MG.
I just hatched out the 7 bcm.

Im ASSUMING the shipped chicks infected my last flock but what if im wrong.
What if it was the eggs i hatched at the same time and mixed with the shipped chicks?

This new batch i have are from the same source as my last hatched ones.

How long before they would show symptoms if the eggs carried MG?

Weeks? Months?

I guess im just over thinking.

Anyhoo....they are doing great. All the coops were sanitized with activated oxine and resting. Chicks are still in the bathtub. I want them out. Their new coop is almost ready.

here his half brother Blade .sired by Day Walker over unicorn .

same hen .but different looking cockerels .
Enkido is short and wide like his sire . big head and comb . slow growing tail .all cockerel from this line has this traits .
Blade is well balanced less chunkier and more refine . Day Walker and Unicorn pairing has produced better cockerels . more complete .

we need to find the compatible pair . so we can breed with less culling .
