International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Chooksman I am worried! There are so many of them. How will I ever be able to choose from them? They seem to be all fairly nice. The cockerels where easy because not very many BC cockerels. How am I going to pick from 40 or so pullets? Getting pictures and keeping track of them even with leg bands. It is proving a challenge.

don t panic .one pullet at time . how many you are planing to keep?

I will pick out my breeders. The rest I will keep most for my laying flock. Plus they will work as a backup if I lose any breeders through the harsh winter. Black Jack didn't like me banding him or his girls. Now he is coming to challenge me.

I have 8 hens laying every other day. Nice color the lighter eggs do hatch more often. I will take 3 # 7 over 5 #4 That is just my preference I give most of my eggs to the Senior Center when I am not hatching TOM

#3 egg colour is not classify marans by SOP standard . minimum #4 .
yes for sure the lighter eggs will hatch better ,but if we want those lighter eggs we should breed RIR or some thing else .
we do not make the SOP neither the genetic make up of marans chooks .but we have to breed them to they full glory . what the SOP call for .
best marans hen is a hen with a correct conformation .lay 180 eggs a year majority of those egg should be #6 . balanced hen
no extreme . extreme always produce problems .
