International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

What's the deal with the spotted eggs? Are they even on the color scale? Are they more desirable than a #9 on the color scale? Just asking if we should breed toward spotted egg? TOM
In my view and I am not a pro at this. Look at it this way. The Marans is not the prettiest bird available in my opinion but they lay a very dark egg which is why most people really enjoy them. Now add dark eggs with some super dark spots to it and to me it’s a win win. Again just my opinion it’s has nothing to do with the breed standard.

This rooster looks way heavy in the front end! If you draw a line from his feet straight up it looks like 3/4 of the bird is up front! More pics?TOM

These are the only pictures i have.
IF i purchase eggs, i will drive over and look at the flock.

I know now what to look for where before, when i purchased my line#1, i had no idea what i was doing. And i was able to see that flock too.

Knowlege is everything.🙂
Ive learned so much and still am. It never stops.

that true . have seen the original French SOP changes through time . just playing with words nothing really got done.

lucky me I can speak and read French so I don t need translation other wise I ll be lost like most peoples .

chooks man
I speak French also, heck no can I read it. It would take me a day to read a page in a newspaper 🤣

This is Hakon a 21 week BCM Cockerel. He is not perfect but he has what I need to put complete hackles on his female progeny. I like his complete body pattern, black under fluff (no parasitic white) and eye color. He is a little unbalanced (front heavy) but he is still growing so he may balance out at maturity. His comb also needs refinement - a little larger than I prefer. I would prefer for his copper markings to be a couple of shades darker and richer in appearance and he has a slight halo. I have two pullets with incomplete hackles (but darker copper) and two all black pullets that I intend to breed him to when they are ready.

Correct me if I am wrong but I personally don’t consider that copper. I would call it blonde. My #2 Rooster has copper with what I consider a blonde halo but I am keeping him because he came from a very dark egg. Am I wrong doing that? Does the Roo have any say in egg color?
I also love the speckled chest.

Here is another 21 week old BCM Cockerel. He is a cull - incomplete body pattern (over melanized) and loaded with parasitic white (see his tail and lower hackle i. pic #2). I am feeding him out and will make chicken & sausage gumbo with him.

In person his copper is a little darker than it appears in the pictures - it is an overcast day here today. I agree its not as dark as I prefer but I wouldn’t call it blonde. Copper color covers a wide range of shades - I think of it as a new penny to an old penny and all shades in between. Any of the copper shades is technically correct but I, as you, prefer the darker copper shade.

What do you think about the roos part in egg color?
