@Punkybrewster
I like this guy a lot .waylons son #1 . great body type complete body pattern .good quality copper .
do you still have him ,hope so . no reason for him to be culled .
chooks man

This was Waylons son.
The hens hated him and he developed a large growth on his neck. Culled.

I have no offspring from Waylon. Too many health problems from him.

I went and registered on the French forum. I don't speak French, so I feel weird about doing much posting over there, I will not be able to converse well, and I know I should learn the language of a forum I would post in, but google translate sort of works even if the tenses are wrong and some things won't translate well, I posted a series of pictures on their Birchen sub, definitely not a very active group overall with the birchen (black silver) but I expected that. I am always wanting to get more opinions, and my interest was piqued in hearing what they might have to say.

I do not have any of Waylons progenies.
He is the rooster that suddenly went lame. I ended up having to cull him. I took all the eggs from that pen and hatched them hoping to carry on. Several of his progeny had wry tails and keels. One had weak legs at around 9 months. I decided to cull them all for this reason. Even the few that looked fine.
bad move ,why do you cull the chooks if they are fine , different blood line ,any way you have a lot of gorgeous one .
when we are trying to breed a new chooks blood line ,we need few different genes come from different blood line .
the combs are too large in the chooks you have now or just the one i have seen so far .
good breeding practice ,never cull a chooks if it is healthy and have some traits you need ,even if they come out of bad blood line ,chooks have a lot mutation .
how many blood line you have now ? and what are they caracteristique ?

It is very hot and humid here in South Carolina. Is it true that heat tends to give them larger combs or is this a myth?
weather has nothing to do with a comb ,all genetic 100%. luck of understanding marans genetic and what type of comb they need to have ,problem is SOP around the world ,they all have a same definition to a straight normal comb . doesn t matter what chooks breed . they all call for the comb to be large with a 6 points ,well arched with a lobe no touching the neck .all the points should be well spaced , not close to each other , recording to them RIR , Marans , minorca and other straight comb breeds they should all have a same comb , they{ SOP} all have a same comb definition .
I have been telling the peoples who are in charge of writing the SOP for marans in Australia not to do a same mistake .marans chooks should have a smaller comb .plus the points they don t need to be large at base and pointy at the top . no need for the comb to be arched and gross like Leghorn chooks .

Yes, he is much darker with dark underfluff but not as much copper at this age. This is why I have kept him so far. He has the darkest underfluff out of the 4 I will keep and let grow some more.

The rest have lighter grey underfluff which makes me think they will end up with some white on them after molt.
that is good he is different .dark underfluf is a good think . no much copper is a problem . for now let him mature and see if he is free from any parasitic white .
did you see my BC and BLc rooster . Blackgen and CTB both are 3 years old . both free from any parasitic white .,so genetically they don t have a white on them .
you have to age your cockerels over 2 years minimum to be sure they are free from it .
we want to dark pure black underfluf but we don t want extra melanin { extra melanin will eliminate the shoulder coloration , bad news}

some thing else I need to see about the underfluf .
dark pure black underfluf will produce the green sheen on the feathers .
greyish underfluf will produce less sheen on the feathers .
BCM are desired to have less sheen . it is not a fault if the have green sheen but not desirable . so we need to balance thing up . when we work with BCM it is all about balance never go extreme .

The top photo in this post is Judith's pullet (yellow leg band). I was only able to hatch 2 of her eggs before culling her. She was an egg eater and would not use a roll out nesting box.

The 2 eggs that hatched gave me 1 pullet, 1 cockerel. He is the cockerel with the yellow leg band in my cockerel photos.
sorry to hear that . she was stunning .
do you still have her daughter ?
I think I know which cockerel you are talking about yellow tag we had a conversation about him few days ago . so he is a keep regardless of what ,he do carry a lot genes from his mama { all the sex linked genes } he will pass them to his daughter in the future . eating eggs is not sex linked gene ,crazy habit that all .

@Chooks man, I love seeing your Marans. They are big and chunky.
I made the decision to cull my smaller U shaped hens earlier this year. I am glad I did.
thank you ,my marans are the best in the country for sure .I worked for more than 9 years to get to where I m now .
I m well pleased .now I need to select the sublime one to keep ,the rest have to go .
now I need to form families to avoid loosing any trait .
I m looking forward to tomorrow ,I ll be in the farm ,I haven t seen them for over a year now .they look impressive in the photos .
shame I did not tag last year progeny I wasn t around so I don t know all of them but I know few for sure . BC are all CTB progeny with different hens ..
next year I will start showing all over Australia for sure .looking forward to that , new chapter for me .
I m working on my web side .
so now I ll be selling Adult breeders birds. fertile eggs . day old chicks . and young pullets/cockerels.
