I can see a lamp what look like side sprig on his comb left side . Can you take a close photo of it . Rather than that his comb has a stunning shape and form

I’ll get a photo later when I get one of the blcm pullet. I don’t think he does, but he does have a ‘thumbprint’ on either side of him comb. I don’t know if this is a general defect or if it is only a defect for some breeds.

Missy chicks are the one with rusty brown feathers not pure black don t worry about it if they are very young the rustiness will go away same as a white flight on feathers in they wings.
Some mossiness express it self as lacing nothing to worry about it . If the mossiness stay longer as they mature that will be a concerned

Yes. It is rusty brown flecking on the tips of their feathers growing out. It is just the young cockerels and it is not extreme but is noticeable.

I've had mossy chicks before. It has always disappeared. What causes this?

Peoples use a lot reason to cull without understanding the reasons .
There is 2 type of lacing or flaking on the tip of the feathers BCM chicks both will moult out .
When you see the mossy or brown lacing in the BCM young cockerels that mean they carry maximum copper in they genomic make up . We should mark those cockerels for later. These type of cockerels will add a lot colour to they progeny . We should mate them to hens with incomplete hackle marking .
If all the feather are completely mossy brown on the pullets chicks than they are a cull .

Here the genetic formula we should apply when selecting the BCM breeders:
BCM rooster with a pure black chest free from any copper should be bred to BCM hens with a complete hackle marking .
BCM rooster with a spotted chest with copper flaking should be bred to BCM hens with incomplete hackle marking ( minimum copper on they hackles).
BCM rooster with a complete coppery chest should be bred to BCM hens without any hackle marking ( all black hens)
Our job as BCM breeders is to balance the matting all the time . We just don t pen any BCM rooster to any BCM hens . That what most peoples do . Bad practice .

Hens in this pen have most copper on their hackles and Junior has lightly spotted chest.

There are only a couple of cockerels growing that have no mossiness. The rest do but you can tell it is growing out and will not be there when they are older. The mossy ones also have good copper coming in on their hackles already.

I have not seen a mossy pullet yet. I have saved 3 or 4 from this hatching.

All hens without complete hackle marking are in with Mr. Good comb. The pullet line pen. This was the plan in the beginning but maybe switch it up next season?

That is great no mossy pullets . Always look for the mossy pullets not the cockerels .

When you look around the BCM population around the world most of the hens have no or little hackle marking . Very rare to find BCM hens with a complete hackle .
Most of the BCM rooster have no or little shoulder colouration . Lot of rooster with a black shoulders.
A reason for that is people cull the chicks with brown lacing ( mossy one s like the one we where talking about.) a lot of wrong information out there . We have to watch .

Photo dump. Blue and Black pullets, plus some of Loki but I took pictures of the wrong side of his comb. Don’t think he has a side sprig though. Also another egg but my granddad fed them today so it could well be a wellie egg.
