Congratulations on your new babies. I would put something on it. If the others start picking on the chick. They can be pretty cannibalistic. That's why a lot of people use the red light then blood doesn't stand out. They sell stop pick stuff but we just put a bit of roofing tar or something on it. It takes a while to wear off though. If it's not openly bleeding you just need to hide it so it doesn't stand out.Hello I’m pretty new to chickens and even newer to marans. I hatched out some eggs I got on Craigslist in a homemade incubator. Now I have 8 healthy looking 2 week old black copper marans. But some of their combs look like they are squished over to one side or the other. They have been this way since hatch and I thought maybe they would pop up as they grow. So far they don’t look like they are getting any straighter.
Also when was taking pictures I noticed one looks to be bleeding just a little. Should I treat that bloody spot with something? Anyway just curious if any more experienced people had any advice. I didn’t even think I wanted marans but I happened on to the eggs available locally and that started me down the rabbit hole so to speak.
Thanks this is my current chicken medicine cabinet would the hen healer be appropriate or one of the othersCongratulations on your new babies. I would put something on it. One of those might work. Hen healer is blue I guess you can try that and see if it works. I am not familiar with some of those products.Sorry I don’t think the picture came through

Really, I have tried a few different things when we had feather pecking going on. A few years ago. Tar worked the best. We have used it for years. That's what they did in the old days. The other chickens only pecked at it once or twice. It tastes nasty but didn't harm them. It had to wear off though. That's why I have hen healer and stop pick and stop bleeding powder. None of it worked. Tar worked!Had to laugh at "roofing tar". LOL. But whatever works. Sounds like a good solution to the problem.
I wonder if using just some food coloring concentrate would work, something other than red. Dab it on with a Qtip.
This my BCM cockerel. I am new to the breed, but would love to know if he is show quality. Any tips/suggestions greatly appreciatedThis thread is dedicated to Black Copper Marans worldwide. All are welcome..... those with their very first BCMs .... the experienced breeders and everyone in between. We can share our experiences, knowledge and love of the breed.
