International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

Here’s a video update on my BCMs. Tell me what you think of them? There’s 2 potential roosters. A smaller one with more copper on the hackles named PeeWee. And a larger one that has a very upright tail carriage. I just called him David Copperhead when he was a chick because he had a copper spot on his head from day1.
I’m seeing two boys. They all look good to me, from what I saw of the video. The cockerel with less copper has a really promising shade of copper, but both are really nice. At this age I don’t like to make conclusions about the quality, only the obvious physical faults can be seen at this stage. As long as their combs are tidy, legs are white with grey shading, eyes are dark orange, blue or in between, type is developing (it won’t be perfect and full yet) and they are healthy, there is nothing else to worry about at this point.

I find that tails change throughout development, so I don’t make final decisions as this point. If they are always held high it is likely they will have squirrel tails as adults but I’d still wait to see.

It’s all a waiting game I’m afraid, hope this gives you some confidence.

how old are they? I agree at this age it is still early to choose.

in the beginning of the video they are around 12 weeks and the end of the video they are closer to 14 weeks. Today the bigger cockerel is getting a lot of color in his hackles. I’ll take another video once the sun comes out. Thanks for the comments!
Would you be able to get any photos? I think when you get the right photos it’s easier to judge the birds correctly, at least for me on my phone screen.

Luckily I just got a good one of him on the flower pot. This is the bigger boy. I made a cockle doodle doo call and he perked up.

He's a good looking boy... ♥️

Just a suggestion... Try not to get him to perk up. That raises his tail in photos because their on alert. More natural stance is better to see him how he is.
I have a super hard time getting natural also because they don't like the phone and their already skittish being broody raised. I have to throw treats to get good pics and even then it's hard.

But yeah, you got 2 boys. Hope to see more pics as they grow.
Are you planning to keep both?
Or keeping the best one of the two?
If your keeping just one, take into consideration also which one is best for your hens so make sure you post pics of them when the time comes? Of course, serious faults negate that....Experts here can definitely help along the way.

Really liked the video also, especially the slow-mo running towards the camera and at the waterer. 👍

I think you have a lovely cockerel there. I love how iridescent his black is, something I don’t always see in young birds. His copper is nice and bold, hopefully it is more even when it fills out the body. Looks like the shoulders are going to be good and deep red too. The tail looks too high, but it’s very tidy for his age. Hopefully this is part because of his alert stance, and it’s lower when resting. Head good, eye good, comb nice, wattles round. I like his legs: clearly pink but plenty of dark grey on scutes. I believe dark legs often relate to birds being highly melanised, meaning his black is strong. Hopefully this doesn’t restrict his copper too much. Body nice and long, fingers crossed his breast plumps up with age.
