International Black Copper Marans Thread - Breeding to the SOP

I have not used this one yet but always thought it would make a funny rooster name.

I’ve never had a black rooster but when I do I’m naming it Johnny Cash. And I’ll name his son Sue, thank you for that idea, I love it.
This might be odd but I feel the need to name one of the boys "Hurt".

Or name them both "Ring" and "Fire" 🤗

If any of them ever attack you can can save the name for then.

Fire makes sense with the plumage colour. Have the two cockerels from last year got names yet?
Nope not yet, I'm way behind.

If I ever get pics posted for evaluation of who stays that's when I'll name them. And then forget and keep calling them by leg band colors like I do with Chloe, I keep marking her eggs Y/O...🤣

Rehomed Loki and Natasha today. Gone to one of my old man’s friends with lots of land. He’s going to breed my French line for a while while I focus on the English GCM project, but I can have any pullets whenever I want.

It’s a shame to let Natasha go with her flat back and good tail, but the yellow legs would just have become a problem. I’ll have to test mate when I get some back in the future.

I’m swapping them for some Polish chicks which I’ll collect when they’re off heat, to give Slash his own, smaller ladies.

He also took the spare silkies and welsummer, so it was a great deal, less mouths to feed for no reason.

yellow legs can be a bummer to breed out. I was a long time working it out, but I am pretty sure I got it licked now. Between side sprigs and yellow legs, I know that before I had mine, there were events... I do know that the scuttlebut on side sprigs in older American lines of Marans is that in the 80s or 90s, when these birds first got here, there were some inbreeding issues and there were no other populations to breed with. Backed against a wall, one of the breeders resorted to including a Pendescenda in the group in an attempt to preserve the egg color and provide some much needed fresh genetic material. This is where the side sprigs that occasionally crop up come from. For the most part, I have diligently selected against this when I see it crop up. I am not sure where the occasional yellow legs come from, but every once in a great while, I spot a yellow legged bird.
