Intervention

That's like asking how many husbands I needed to get it right... you don't know at the time....

(so far it's 3, but I've decided anything happens to this one, that's it!, it's living in sin!)

LOL I was about to say "3 coops or husbands?" until I read the 'sin' part- And then I realized you must be talking about the money it costs to build a chicken coop!!!!

XD

Sorry, it's "Mr Saddi the 3rd", I decided i'm not having a 4th husband (not phylis diller here)

My wife says chickens have taken over the backyard.

Unfortunately, she is correct.

I REALLY do need an intervention.

But how can you not love the results?

I wonder how many coops a person has to build before they get it 'right?'.......

I'm on #6. I'll let ya know if I EVER get it right.

Nice eggs Mahonri!

Makes us want to ...get....more....chickens!

Saddina- I know you meant 3 husbands- I was joking!!

LOL @ Phyllis Diller. Hey- you could have as many as six and still be behind Liz Taylor!

Yeah, that's me.

I looked at getting a shed kit from the hardware store, and modifying that. I decided that the materials were too shoddy. I set out to build a small chicken coop from scratch.

I built it near the run, but where I could conveniently walk around it while building it. Figured I'd move it over about 10 feet when it was finished.

Well, I'm an engineer ... so I used 4x4s (might want to park on top of it someday), cement fiber siding (50 year warranty, won't be replacing rotting plywood walls in my lifetime), a gable roof (want to be able to handle that snow load here in Maryland where it snows maybe twice a year or so, wanted soffit vents, too lazy to go all out with a hip roof though). End result? It cost double, and it's too heavy to lift with a bloody tractor.

I ended up using a log as a fulcrum and a 4x4 and jacking one corner at a time. Takes a while to move a two ton chicken coop 10' by hand, 6" at a time.

Oh, and of course this thing looks nothing like the cute coops people post here all the time, built by talented carpenters. I looks like it was built by an aestetically-challenged engineer.

It's ok wombat, the first step in overcomming over-engineering is admitting you've had a problem.

Uhhhh why not just extend the run the 10 ft differance instead of moving it?

Um... Is it OK to laugh at that? Because I'm about to lose it

(SORRY Wombat! That's kinda funny- My bad!)

Just curious- what were you thinking using 4x4s? They're chickens not African elephants!

It's so sweet that you wanted such a great home for your chickens tho!

Could you post a photo of your Chicken Palace, anyway? I'd love to see it! How many chickens does it house? How many could it house?

WOW- 4x4s & cement fiber siding... I bet that thing could survive unscathed through 2 Katrinas, a 9.7-Richter earthquake, direct lava-flow, and the Rapture!

Oh, I'd be embarrased to post pictures of it. It's a silly looking thing, and my wife painted it yellow.

In my defense, I did only use the 4x4s on the corners. Um, and one in the center of each wall. The rest is merely 2x4s. Every 18". With R13 insullation between the walls.

I didn't extend the run because I wanted the coop where I ended up putting it. It gets the shade from a small maple tree in the summer, and in the winter, the leaves are off the maple tree, so it gets sun. I built it over a bit, under a bigger tree ... hey, it was hot out, I wanted to work in the shade.

It's not very big, I only wanted room for about eight to ten chickens. Someday I'll build a larger run and coop, and this one might get used for breeding if I get more chicken crazy.

If it were ever hit by a car, though, I think the car would lose.

That's ok, I was probably exagerating a bit to make it more humorous. The dang thing probably doesn't weigh an ounce over 1.5 tons.
