My birds are about 12-13 weeks old (except for 2 that are about 11 weeks old). Some time back, I realized that my novice enthusiasm bought me too many birds for my coop. They have been outside for about 6 or 7 weeks. In the coop, I have 8 pullets (2 ea RIR, SLW, and maybe Columbian cross and 1 ea Olive egger and BO). They cohabitat nicely. In a much less secure separate temporary holding pen (awaiting a chicken tractor completion this weekend) there are 7 SLW that I think are all cockrells, 4 Rock Red X that were initially bought for eggs, but due to their larger size, will be meaties with the cockrells, and 1 remaining RIR of unknown gender. I thought (s)he was a cockrell when I put it in there, but now I'm not sure.
Two CX and Evil Little B... (rhymes sort of with mustard) were harvested last week. ELB was a RIR cockrell with an attitude. Since he was removed from the temporary pen, the other RIR hunkers down in the back corner of the pen and isn't allowed to eat when the others eat. One of the SLW cockrells is very aggressive and picks on another SLW and though he doesn't directly challenge the RIR, the RIR seems to be intimidated by him.
Since they have been separated for several weeks, I don't know if I can reintroduce shim to the coop to see if the girls will leave it alone. The meatie potentials are too small to harvest, so that isn't an option.
The coop is 5 X 8 with a 10' square run off of it. Any ideas?
Temporary pen
Coop before it was put in the orchard and prior to the run.
